Olympus Tough TG-1 iHS review

Instead of producing just another really rugged camera (which it is), the Olympus Tough TG-1 iHS has something no other model currently offers: a bright f2.0 maximum aperture.

The Olympus Tough TG-1 iHS is water-, dust-, freeze-, shock-, and crushproof; has fast shooting performance for its class; and has a fast lens with the capability to add on converter lenses for more shooting flexibility.

The TG-1 iHS has some minor design issues, such as a proprietary charging cable, that might turn some buyers off.

The Olympus Tough TG-1 iHS combines a bright lens, a high-sensitivity, high-speed sensor, and some nice extras to make it a top rugged compact camera.

Olympus Tough TG-1 iHS

The Olympus Tough TG-1 iHS would be a very good camera even without a rugged design. Its go-anywhere design, GPS, fast f/2 lens, and impressive high ISO performance make it our Editors' Choice for rugged point-and-shoot cameras.

Excellent high ISO performance. Fast f/2 lens. Snappy performance. Accepts filters and conversion lenses. GPS and digital compass. Macro LED light.

Not the sharpest lens. No dedicated battery charger.

Performance and Conclusions The TG-1 is an impressively speedy camera. It can start and shoot in just under a second, rattles off full-resolution photos at 5 frames per second, and records a short 0.2-second shutter lag. It can also capture 100-shot...

Great camera you can take anywhere!

I don't think I am any rougher on this camera than I am on others that I own, and this is the only one I've ever had to send in to be repaired! Had I not purchased the extended warranty I would be a whole lot more frustrated about repairs, esp. since...

Takes great pictures, like having the option of a zoom lens attachment. Easy to use overall

I've had my camera since June 2012 & had to send it back 2x to be fixed. Both times Olympus fixed the camera & sent it back in a timely manner, however it was sent back with a hair inbetween the lens'! This time the function button came off the ba

Audio too poor to function as a video camera

Would not recommend this camera, unimpressed and a waste of money. Do not buy

Has different functions to change the image

- Slow, laggy at times - Loud annoying clicking noise when recording, even worse when zooming in the record function - VERY easy to damage/ scratch despite being 'tough'...

Don't buy this camera video has horrible ticking noise!

Buy any other camera - you'll be better off.

Takes nice pictures

Holy moley! You can't take video without a horrible ticking noise in the video. Trust me you can't fix it and Olympus won't take it back past the return date. The camera is not usable for video at all! They didn't even fix the TG 2.

Perfect, until it met sand

Bought the camera for the family cruise to the Bahamas this week, and it was perfect until we got to the beach. Within the first hour, the shutter button started sticking, then all the other buttons did as well, sand that got in between them had dug...

Great features, great pictures

Raised or open buttons allow sand to get in and then they're stuck.

I have 2 other rugged cams but this is the best.

Great cam for rugged use as well as general use. I like to attach it to the outside top of my Jeep windshield to capture off road adventures and general driving. The GPS works well for that. Although pricy I feel the cam is well worth it. I do wish it...

This cam has some great features. The dog face recognition and locking focus point are very handy. I have a 3D TV so I like the 3D photo feature. The OLED display is great. Only compact cam that I can us a polorizing filter with.

This cam only shoots in 4x3 or 16x9. If you want to print a 4x6 you have to crop it. The 3D photos can only be viewed from the camera connected to the TV. You can't save them to a USB drive.

They finally made a camera for me!

The third 'tough' Olympus that I've owned. The others two weren't quite waterproof despite careful use. I have been impressed by the ease of use and the speed of this camera. A real point-and-shoot, especially in the iAuto mode. I have not been...

Rapid, excellent handling, picture quality good, rugged, IdiotAuto mode very practical, face focus snappy, works with Eye-Fi card, rugged.

Why not a micro USB cable? Waterproofing has to be done yearly at Olympus shop.

Excellent tough camera.

I have had this camera over a month. I pre-ordered and got the camera a few days ahead of the release date. Right out of the box I liked the camera but wanted to wait till after a trip to Disney to really see how it preformed. I shoot almost everything...

f2.0, great in low light, fast boot and very easy to use.

No full manual control
