The 7.2-megapixel Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8 offers 12X optical zoom, manual modes, and a wealth of helpful features.

12X optical zoom. Full manual capabilities. Intelligent ISO mode. Variety of flash settings.

Lacks wide-angle view. Nonarticulating LCD.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8 Review

Almost exactly a year after the introduction of the DMC-FZ7, Panasonic's popular compact super-zoom camera, comes its replacement; the Lumix DMC-FZ8. Where the FZ7 was a fairly major upgrade to the camera that came before it (the FZ5), the FZ8 is,...

Excellent resolution & sharp results Good, natural color and excellent exposure Superb 12x optical zoom Smooth, almost stepless 2-speed zoom Effective image stabilization Small and light, but well built Comprehensive range of controls Very fast...

Some areas of performance actually worse than predecessor Noise is, as usual, a bit of a problem at lower ISO settings ISO 400+ noise reduction produces color bleeding and loss of low contrast detail Default noise reduction too high at all ISO settings...

Maybe because my expectations have been lowered, maybe because no one else is doing it any better, I ended up liking the FZ8 more than I expected to. The FZ7 was a significant upgrade to the FZ5 (one of the most popular super zoom models ever), and the...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8

Along with easy operation, the DMC-FZ8 also features the Panasonic LSI Venus Engine III, anadvanced image-processing engine that can record at a sensitivity setting as high as ISO1250 with full resolution -- greatly improving noise reduction, with...

Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ8 review

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8 Digital Camera - Full Review - The Imaging Resource!

Compact and lightweight ; Easy to use for beginners ; Advanced feature set for enthusiasts ; 12x image-stabilized optical zoom lens ; RAW mode ; White Balance can be fine-tuned ; Good speed ; Selectable AF points ; Exposure bracketing ; Live Histogram...

Noise and noise suppression visible even at low ISO ; High ISO image noise and noise reduction degrades image quality ; Significant chromatic aberration at telephoto ; Digital zoom is soft due to noise suppression ; Moderate barrel distortion at wide...

Following in the footsteps of the FZ7, the updated 7.2 megapixel Panasonic DMC-FZ8 is equipped with a 12x optical zoom lens that delivers a 36mm-432mm equivalent focal length. Unlike many Panasonic cameras, the FZ8's lens starts at 36mm, which about...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8 Review

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8 is a strong contender in the crowded ultra-zoom digital camera field.

SLR style body, fast, improved LCD and EVF, 12X zoom, image stabilization, manual controls, sharp  images

Noisy images, minor chromatic aberration, smearing/blotching at higher ISO sensitivities

I really liked the the super compact and lightweight FZ8.  This snappy little digicam provides an SLR-like level of photographic control and creative flexibility, but without the bulky bag of lenses that would be needed to cover the same (36mm - 432mm)...

Panasonic`s Lumix DMC-FZ8

Panasonic had their hands full trying to improve upon the DMC-FZ7, but they may have done it with the Lumix DMC-FZ8. This camera was released in March of 2007, and on the surface it looks really good. Keep reading to see what we think of it.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8

I don't think anyone's going to complain about those new features, except for maybe the Venus III Engine, which has a rather overzealous noise reduction system (to say the least)

Very good photo quality (at lowest ISO setting and in good lighting) ; Superb 12X optical zoom Leica lens; lens can be precisely adjusted with new two speed zoom controller ; Optical image stabilization ; Well built for the price ; Large, sharp 2.5"...

Heavy noise reduction smears/mottles details when ISO is above 100, or in low light ; Some redeye ; Useless high sensitivity mode ; No USB 2.0 High Speed support ; Can't swap memory cards while camera is on tripod ; Manual leaves much to be desired

I pretty much hit on all of the FZ8's negatives in the preceding paragraphs, so now it's time to wrap things up. Do I like the DMC-FZ8 and recommend it to most people? Easily. Do I wish it produced better quality photos when the ISO isn't 100 and the...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8 is a 7.2 Megapixel super-zoom camera with a 12x stabilised lens. Announced in January 2007, it's the successor to Panasonic's earlier Lumix FZ7.

12x optical zoom with OIS ; Decent quality 2.5in screen ; Quick access to settings ; Good manual control and RAW mode

Noise becomes a problem above 200 ISO ; Wide angle coverage 'only' 36mm ; No flip-out screen ; May be too small and light for some

It’s revealing three-quarters of the cameras we’ve compared the FZ8 against here all cost around 50% more. The simple fact is there’s no real competition for the FZ8 at its price range other than Panasonic’s own Lumix TZ3, which as discussed above is...
