While image quality isn't the FX33's strong point, it still produces perfectly fine small prints, and thus its novice-friendly feature set and speedy operation makes it a good choice for those after a happy snap camera.

Sturdy and sleek design, tons of features, new Intelligent Auto mode, speedy burst mode

Soft pictures, some noise issues

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX33

Panasonic's latest Leica-lensed ultra-compact combines style, performance and simplicity.

Panasonic keeps chipping away at Canon's position in the premium ultra-compact market, and with the wide-angle Lumix DMC-FX33 it has a camera that can take on the best of the IXUS range. It has style, elegance, build quality, performance and simplicity...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX33

If you really crave a literal point-and-shoot camera, and could do without most manual controls, the FX33 is possibly be your best bet so far.

Competent automatic mode ; Minimalist looks ; Relatively speedy performance ; Wide-angle lens

Very average optical zoom ; No real option for switching to manual mode

Well, for one, there were misses. Sometimes the white balance wasn't spot on. But it scored more hits than misses primarily because of the way this camera is designed -- with very few onboard manual controls. It makes sense to leave it on auto-pilot...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX33: Review

Slim wide angle compact may be the bargain of 2008

Ease of use ; Vivid, vibrant pictures ; Excellent lens ; Superb value for money

High ISO better, but still not great ; Could do with more creative control ; Can soften low-contrast pictures

A 'replacement' is coming though. Panasonic recently announced a DMC-FX35, essentially a 10.1 megapixels and a 25mm equivalent wide-angle lens (plus a few extra features like 720p video capture and the Mk IV version of the Venus processing engine)....

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX33

You may at first struggle to see why the Panasonic is the most expensive camera here. But it's when you start to use it that you see what's different. The build quality and finish, for a start, is a cut above, even down to the feel and the operation of...

The Panasonic is likely to cost you more than the rest, but its the build quality, pictures and features will convince you its worth it.

Panasonic DMC FX33

The Panasonic DMC FX33 is small, compact digital camera. It has 8 megapixels and a 3.6x wide angle lens. The camera looks good and is available in a variety of colours. It also scores highly for simplicity and ease if use.

Settings for 6 x 4 prints and panoramic shots - image stabilisation - LCD screen display - ease of use

Struggled with lower light shots - images could be a shade sharper - noise creeps in

"Easy to use, looks good fits into a pocket. That all sounds good, but I was a bit disappointed by the picture quality I managed to achieve with this camera. Usually I like Panasonic cameras, but I struggled with this one."
