Panasonic Lumix FX9 review: Panasonic Lumix FX9

Panasonic Lumix FX9

Optical stabilization improves low-light shooting without flash; jewel-like design and build; decent color rendition; snappy performance.

Some minor lens aberrations; image-processing artifacts; several controls and icons don't make sense without manual.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX9 is a beautifully built pocket camera that's good for slow-shutter shooting but suffers from a variety of image flaws.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX9 Review

The original FX7 was announced in July 2004 and went on to be one of the best-selling cameras of last year thanks to its winning combination of cool styling, compact dimensions, big screen and image-stabilized Leica lens. After a fairly disappointing...

High resolution, clean images Excellent color - vivid but natural High quality construction, lovely design Good edge-to-edge sharpness Reliable white balance Feels fast and responsive High speed focus near class-leading performance Big, bright, high...

Visible noise reduction effects at ISO 160 and above Noisy at ISO 400 (better than previous generation, however) Some vignetting at F2.8 Results a little soft at F6.3 and over No manual control of shutter speed or aperture Occasional exposure problems...

The DMC-FX7 (and it's minor upgrade, the FX8) were deservedly popular pocket cameras with a unique selling point; an image-stabilized Leica lens. The only serious issues we identified when reviewing the FX7, namely poor battery life and a low...

Camera Modes and Menus Record Mode: In Record mode, the camera can capture still images or movies, with a range of options available through the Settings menu. The Exposure Mode dial sets the exposure control mode. The Lumix FX9's LCD menu -- accessed...

Optical stabilization helps greatly for hand holding the camera in dim lighting, Very good battery life, Accurate LCD viewfinder, Fairly fast startup/shutdown, Good macro focusing capability, Optional histogram displays in both record and playback...

Little manual control, Less than optimal ergonomics, Poor flash and low light performance, Auto and Incandescent white balance are way too warm, Some softness and chromatic aberration in the corners, High image noise at ISO 400

Panasonic has been an interesting player in the digital camera market for the last few years. The 6.0-megapixel Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX9 adds a little more interest by steadying its 3x zoom with Panasonic's MEGA optical image stabilizer. Panasonic is...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ30

If you're ready to learn about this slick little camera, I'm ready to tell you. Read on

Compact metal body, comes in two colors ; Good photo quality (see issues below) ; Optical image stabilization ; Robust performance, especially with a high speed SD card ; Large, high resolution 2.5" LCD; screen is visible in low light ; AF-assist lamp;...

Images on the soft side; some purple fringing ; Redeye a problem ; No optical viewfinder ; Needs more manual controls ; Flimsy plastic door over memory card / battery compartment ; Tiny 16MB card included

If you want a capable and compact point-and-shoot camera, I'd recommend taking a look at the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX9. It's not without its flaws, but its large screen, image stabilizer, good photo quality, fancy movie mode, and easy-to-use menu system...

Panasonic Lumix FX9

This is how small the FX9 is compared to other cameras:

Ultra-compact and stylish ; Great battery life ; Optical image stabilization ; Excellent LCD (Sharpness AND visibility) ; Extremely fast ; Unlimited continuous shooting ; Excellent movie mode ; User friendly ; Good photo quality

No manual controls ; Low FPS rate for "infinite shooting ; Flimsy battery/card cover ; Red-eye ; Some soft photos ; No movie zoom

The Panasonic Lumix FX9 is a great camera: 6 megapixels, a 2.5 inch LCD, great battery life and best of all, optical image stabilization. The 2.5 inch LCD has a significantly higher resolution than the one on the FX7/FX8 and is a lot brighter too. OIS...
