Panasonic’s GH5s is perfect for video shooters and no one else

Panasonic's GH5s mirrorless camera sets a new standard for mirrorless video. The multi-aspect sensor enables high-quality, 10-bit Cinema 4K video with a wider field of view than the GH5, while offering much-improved low-light shooting. It's not ideal...

Best 4K video quality of any mirrorless camera ; Excellent low-light capability ; Handles very well for video and photography

Low-resolution sensor for photos ; No in-body optical stabilization ; Lack of phase-detect autofocus

Panasonic Lumix GH5S hands-on review

The GH5S is a fantastic camera for a specific user, but the standard GH5 is still the hybrid photo/video king.

Video-focused 10.2MP, multi-aspect sensor ; Waveform, vectorscope displays ; Dual native ISO ; DCI 4K at 60 fps ; Time code in/out

No image stabilization ; More expensive than GH5

Panasonic Lumix DC-GH5S Review

The Panasonic GH5S is best understood as an even more video-centric variant of the GH5. We've tested it in a range of circumstances to see whether the video improvements are worth the loss of stabilization.

Panasonic Lumix DC-GH5S

The Panasonic Lumix DC-GH5S is a new version of the GH5 with a 10.2MP sensor that's built for 4K video and native dual ISO to curb noise when shooting in dim light.

Native 4K sensor and dual native ISO for excellent low-light video quality. Same build quality as GH5. Dual card slots. Vari-angle touch LCD. Big, sharp EVF. 14-bit Raw imaging V-Log L and HLG included.

Omits in-body stabilization. 10.2MP sensor not ideal for imaging. No built-in flash. Pricey.

Bottom Line: The Panasonic Lumix DC-GH5S is a new version of the GH5 with a 10.2MP sensor that's built for 4K video and native dual ISO to curb noise when shooting in dim light.

Panasonic Lumix GH5S Review

The Panasonic Lumix GH5S is a specialist tool that isn't going to appeal to everyone, but stills photographers and especially looking videographers looking for the ultimate low-light camera will find a lot to like.

Panasonic GH5S Review

The GH5 was, and is, a fantastic camera for video, but the Panasonic GH5S goes above and beyond. Its 10MP resolution is a bit low for photos, but it's great for video.

Excellent video quality; Very good high ISO performance; Cinema 4K & UHD video up to 60p; Full HD up to 240p; 10-bit internal video recording; Tons of features & options for advanced/pro videographers.

10MP resolution is limiting for still photos; No in-body image stabilization; Slower AF than GH5; Buffer clearing could be faster; No 6K Photo features due to sensor resolution.

The GH5 was, and is, a fantastic camera for video, but the Panasonic GH5S goes above and beyond. Its 10MP resolution is a bit low for photos, but it's great for video. The GH5S offers better video quality, more recording options, and just tons of...
