Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX550 Review

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX550 (also known as the DMC-FX580 in the USA) is a new touch-screen digital camera. Offering a large 3.0-inch LCD screen, the 12.1 megapixel FX550 combines touch screen operation with standard cursor key control. Other key...

Though first impressions of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX550 are of a camera as unassuming as its plain, silver grey faceplate (it's also available in a more sophisticated black), the more you play with it the more that exterior changes in your mind's eye...

Lumix DMC-FX580

($399) may look like Just Another Ultra-Compact Camera, but it has two features that most cameras in its class do not. The first is a 3-inch touchscreen LCD display. While many camera manufacturers have touchscreen cameras, the FX580 is somewhat unique...

5X optical zoom lens with wide 25 - 125 mm range ; Optical image stabilization ; Ultra-compact body, comes in silver and black ; Large, 3-inch touchscreen LCD with good outdoor and low light visibility ; Well designed touchscreen UI (most of the time);...

Noisy images, even at lowest ISO; noise reduction eats away at fine and low contrast detail ; Camera tends to overexpose, and frequently clips highlights ; Poor low light focusing ; Color cast in unusual lighting ; Slow startup and zoom speeds ; Videos...

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX580 was a camera that I really wanted to love. Not for its touchscreen interface (though Panasonic did a good job with that), but for its manual controls. Unfortunately, things didn't work out between us: the FX580's mediocre...

Panasonic DMC-FX580

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX580 takes all the manual controls that power users so adore, combines them with an effective touch-screen augmented interface, and packs it all into a relatively small camera. Unfortunately, as much as we love some of the...

The Panasonic's claim to fame is the extensive manual control you have over the shooting experience. It has a number of settings that usually are only found on SLRs. It's not very common to see a point-and-shoot camera with manual shooting mode,...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX580 Review

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX580 strikes a nice balance between integrated touch screen functionality and good old-fashioned physical buttons.

Manual controls ; Good build quality ; Nice image quality

Poor at high ISO ; Short flash range ; Cost

Not the best camera in the class (and not the worst), it remains to be seen if the touch screen features are enough of a draw to pull buyers to a camera with essentially average overall performance in a crowded field of competitors.

Panasonic DMC-FX580

We were impressed by the level of control, but image quality was overall sub-par

Oodles of manual controls

Poor color accuracy; High noise above ISO 400; Unimpressive sharpness

Our view on the FX580 is split. On one hand, we absolutely love the manual controls. Manual, aperture-priority, and shutter-priority shooting modes. Tweakable white balance. Auto exposure bracketing. Adjustable noise compensation, sharpness, saturation...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX550 digital camera

Though an attractive brushed metal faceplate and solid build distracts from its otherwise boxy dimensions, Panasonic's latest Lumix FX550 point and shoot is certainly one of the more conventionally styled yet premium priced compacts (at £294 SRP) we've...

Solid feel, metal construction, pocket size, large LCD screen, touch screen operation and button control provides a "best of both worlds"

Video not full HD, no HDMI out port and required cable costs extra

If conditions are sufficiently clement the Panasonic FX550 proves itself a reliable performer, consistently delivering colourful even exposures. However it’s not immune to pixel fringing on close inspection and white balance occasionally biasing...

Panasonic DMC-FX550 review - digital compact camera reviews and video

Retro styling meets 12MP stills, 3in touchscreen LCD and 720p HD movies. Has Panny's FX550 got the lot?

Simply stunning shots. Tactile design. Intuitive touchscreen

Touch panel 12 megapixel, 5x zoom compact shooting HD movies

With pricing comparable to immediate rivals, if you're looking for a pocket snapper that presents a small(ish) form factor, good sturdy build, choice of button or touch screen control and consistent JPEG performance, look no further than the FX550.
