Panasonic Lumix G9 review

Great build quality ; Intelligent control layout ; 80MP high-resolution mode ; 5-axis in-body stabilization ; 6K photo and 4K video

Burst rate has odd limitations ; Smaller sensor than similarly sized/priced competitors

Panasonic Lumix DC-G9 Review

The Lumix DC-G9 is Panasonic's top stills-oriented camera and can shoot 20 fps with AF. It also features the best stabilization we've tested to date. Read our full review.

It seemed for a little while there, the two biggest players in the Micro Four Thirds world were splitting off into their own separate niches with Olympus going after the pro stills crowd by way of the EM-1 series and Panasonic, the pro video crowd with...

Panasonic Lumix DC-G9

Panasonic's mirrorless Lumix DC-G9 camera boasts some head-turning specs, including 60fps Raw image capture, but we'll have to see if its real-world performance lives up to its promise.

Shoots at 60fps in Raw format. Tracks subjects at 20fps. 20MP sensor with 80MP high-resolution mode. EVF with 0.83x magnification. 4K video at 60fps. Vari-angle touch LCD. Rugged, dust- and splash-resistant body. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Video not as robust as GH5. High-resolution capture requires tripod and static subject.

Bottom Line: Panasonic's mirrorless Lumix DC-G9 camera boasts some head-turning specs, including 60fps Raw image capture, but we'll have to see if its real-world performance lives up to its promise.

The Lumix G9 seeks the same cachet for stills as the GH5 boasts for video

Panasonic hopes a combination of speed, tonal tuning and body design will tempt serious photographers.

Panasonic Lumix G9

Where the Panasonic GH5 is a video-first DSLM (Digital Single Lens Mirrorless) camera that can also shoot good still images in a pinch, Panasonic has unveiled the Lumix G9, a flagship still-focused sister model that can also shoot good video in a pinch.

Panasonic Lumix G9

Panasonic's best stills camera to date. Panasonic Lumix G9.

Superb design and handling ; Excellent 4K & 6K photo modes ; Well supported by Micro Four Thirds lenses ; Offers high-resolution 40MP & 80MP modes

Positioning of AF toggle could be better ; Lacks battery level indication as percentage ; Burst shot mode descriptions aren’t clear ; No in-camera panoramic mode

Panasonic’s best stills camera to date. The Lumix G9 is a sound mirrorless camera boasting a speedy specification, which it backs up with an admirable performance out in the field.

Panasonic Lumix G9 review

Meet the photographer-focused Lumix GH5

6.5-stop image stabilization ; Up to 60fps burst shooting ; Large viewfinder ; Great grip and handling ; Dual UHS-II card slots

ISO range could be broader ; Reduced screen size compared to GH5 ; Battery level not shown as a percentage

Excellent image quality, 60fps shooting, polished handling and a wealth of advanced features add up to make the Lumix G9 a brilliant all-round mirrorless camera and Panasonic's best mirrorless camera to date.

Panasonic Lumix G9 review: The finest mirrorless camera that money can buy

With mighty impressive image stabilisation, an ultra-sensitive shutter, super-fast burst mode, accomplished continuous autofocus and burst shooting,

Huge range of Micro Four Thirds lenses (incl. new 200mm f/2.8 Leica) ensure top image quality ; Massive viewfinder and useful vari-angle LCD ; 4K video and 6K stills modes ; Super-fast burst modes ; Accomplished continuous autofocus ; Pinpoint AF mode

Viewfinder eyecup could fit tighter ; Optional battery grip should offer two batteries ; Smaller LCD screen than GH5 ; Smaller sensor than some rivals ; No 'super raw' with post-focus adjustment (like Canon 5D IV)

With mighty impressive image stabilisation, an ultra-sensitive shutter, super-fast burst mode, accomplished continuous autofocus and burst shooting, plus a viewfinder that's unrivalled by any mirrorless model, the G9 really is the finest mirrorless...
