Pentax K-5 II

Note that because of the near-identical specification and identical design of the K-5 II and K-5 IIS, the commentary in this review refers to the 'K-5 II' throughout, and except where specifically noted, the term 'K-5 II' should be taken to refer to...

Good detail and dynamic range (even better in Raw) ; Very low shadow noise in Raw files at low ISOs ; One of the best APS-C DSLRs in terms of high ISO image quality ; Very good build quality and handling ; Maximum ISO of 51,200 at full resolution ;...

No dedicated movie shooting button (important only if you plan to use the movie mode often) ; No AF during movie shooting ; Poorly implemented live histogram in live view/manual exposure mode (doesn't indicate final exposure) ; No 'live' aperture...

Bearing all that the K-5 II does minus an optical low-pass filter, the K-5 IIS is a specialized camera made for those who want a little more detail and know how to handle the resulting artifacts. Its weatherproof design and small, tight build make it...

Pentax K-5 IIs

The Pentax K-5 IIs omits a low-pass filter in order to capture extremely fine image detail, but its video capture capabilities are behind the times.

No low-pass filter. Excellent viewfinder. Fast 6.2fps shooting. Good high ISO performance. Weather-sealed design. In-body shake reduction. Compact for its class. Excellent control layout.

Disappointing video experience.

One byproduct of the weather sealing is that it helps to quiet the sound of the shutter—it's one of the quietest you'll find on a traditional D-SLR. Sony cameras like the Alpha 77, which feature fixed mirrors and electronic viewfinders, are quieter—but...

Pentax K-5 II

The Pentax K-5 II is a top-notch D-SLR when it comes to still capture, but its video performance is disappointing in comparison.

Excellent viewfinder. Fast 6.2fps shooting. Good high ISO performance. Weather-sealed design. In-body shake reduction. Compact for its class. Excellent control layout.

Disappointing video experience.

Pentax updates K-5 dSLR, offers AA-filter-free model

The K-5 II gets an enhanced autofocus system, plus a sibling without an antialiasing filter. And they're accompanied by a couple of new lenses.

Pentax K-5 II and K-5 IIs Review

This rugged dSLR offers a wealth of features and customizable settings that are easily located so you can focus on your subject. If it's manual controls you're after, look no further. Read more in our Full Conclusion.

16MP, APS-C sized CMOS sensor ; High-resolution LCD (921k dots) ; ISO up to 51200 ; Sensor-shift shake and dust reduction works with any Pentax lens ; Solid body with 77 weather seals ; 9 image modes and 18 digital filters ; Live View on high...

Auto focus in Live View is slow ; Auto exposure was sometimes inaccurate ; Low-light images look noisy ; Auto magnify does not work with Live View and manual focus ; JPEG processing could be better

Pentax K-5 IIs Review

The Pentax K-5 IIs is a new semi-professional DSLR camera, based around the same body design as the older K-5 and the same 16.3 megapixel image sensor as found in the Nikon D7000 and Sony A55 cameras, but without an anti-aliasing filter for increased...

The Pentax K-5 IIs follows the recent trend of entirely dispensing with its anti-aliasing filter in the pursuit of greater clarity and resolution. A close comparison with the "normal" Pentax K-5 II model reveals that the "s" version does indeed...

The Pentax K-5 II is a new semi-professional DSLR camera, based around the same body design as the older K-5 and the same 16.3 megapixel image sensor as found in the Nikon D7000 and Sony A55 cameras. Key features include a new Safox X AF module that...

At first glance the Pentax K-5 II seems like a very minor upgrade of the two-year-old K-5, but the improved auto-focusing system, better LCD screen and the much lower official price make one of our favourite DSLR cameras even better. The K-5 II is an...

For the last couple of generations of Pentax's K-series flagships, as soon as I've returned the review camera, I've gone out and bought one for myself. For a change, I won't be doing that with the K-5 II -- the changes Pentax has made since the K-5...

For years now, we've heard readers asking the camera manufacturers to offer a camera without an optical low-pass filter in the quest for the maximum possible resolution. Some have seen OLPF-free digicams as something of a holy grail, but the truth of...

Camera Review: Pentax K-5 IIs

Pentax continues to up its DSLR game.

Improved autofocus over the K-5; option of a model without an anti-aliasing filter

Continuous burst rate seemed lower than the claimed 7 frames per second; if you’re used to a full-frame sensor, you won’t find it here
