Pentax K-r

The entry-level Pentax K-r boasts fast continuous shooting and does a good job in low-light, but this D-SLR ships with a kit lens that is anything but sharp and lacks autofocus capability during video recording.

Fast continuous shooting. In-body shake reduction. High-resolution rear LCD.

Small viewfinder. Poor kit lens. No autofocus during video.

Pentax has built a nice menu system into the camera for those times when you need to adjust a shooting setting that doesn't have a physical control. Hitting the Info button scrolls through various rear displays, one of which is a laundry list of common...

Pentax K-r

Pentax has long made very good digital SLRs that offer excellent image quality with simple, intuitive interfaces. And while their latest cameras pack a thorough selection of high-end features, they also have something that a lot of competing SLRs...

Excellent image quality ; Simple interface ; Thorough feature set ; Good high ISO performance

No depth-of-field preview button ; LCD screen must be turned off and on manually

If you're looking for a small, lightweight, inexpensive starter DSLR, then the Pentax K-r is a great choice, thanks to its image quality and huge array of features.

Pentax K-r Review

The format of this review has been slightly shortened as the Pentax K-r is operationally similar and identical in terms of output to the Pentax K-x that we reviewed in December 2009. We tested to confirm the image quality is identical, then...

Pentax K-r dSLR Review

Pentax has created a worthy competitor in the entry to mid-level dSLR categories, with pleasing image quality, speedy shooting performance, and improved Live View performance compared to past models. This camera will appeal to a wide variety of...

Stylish and comfortable body ; Three matching body/lens color combinations; White, Black, and Red ; Robust shooting performance in normal shooting modes ; Fast and accurate 11-point AF system, even in lower lighting ; Improved performance in Live View...

OVF is a bit dim, and shows minimal info ; ISO 12,800 and 25,600 look horrible ; Lacks more robust HD video options, like a full 1080p option ; HDR mode doesn't give you the dramatic effects you see from heavily processed HDR images that are created...

Pentax K-rDigital Camera Review

What follows is a quick overview of the video capabilities of the Pentax K-r. Read our comprehensive analysis and testing results in greater detail at DigitalCameraInfo.com.

The Pentax K-r certainly isn’t the best video-capable DSLR that’s passed through our labs, but it isn’t the worst either. The camera is a step up over the Pentax K-x in terms of video performance, and we were consistently impressed by the K-r’s ability...

Pentax K-r Review

The Pentax K-r is a new mid-range DSLR camera aimed at digital SLR novices and family users. The K-r combines the compact body and simplified layout of the cheaper K-x model with some of the advanced features of the prosumer K-7, most notably the...

The Pentax K-r adds a few new features, most notably the 6fps burst shooting mode and expanded ISO range, to the proven user interface of the cheaper K-x and the high-resolution screen and illuminated AF system of the more expensive K-7, to create a...

Pentax K-r

With a 12-megapixel sensor, a high-res 3-inch LCD, and a six frame per second burst rate, the Pentax K-r takes up the middle spot between the K-7 and the K-x. The Pentax K-r sports a number of improvements over the K-x, most notable of which is the...

Relatively compact body with good control layout ; Very good high ISO performance ; ISOs up to 25,600 ; Much better color accuracy than the K-x at default settings ; 3-inch hi-resolution (921K dot) LCD ; Optional lens distortion and CA correction ;...

Mediocre kit lens ; Below average battery life ; Autofocus struggles in low light ; Subtle NR applied to high ISO RAW files which can't be disabled ; High ISO NR has trouble with low-contrast areas in the red channel ; Contrast setting impacts...

When I reviewed the Pentax K-x last year, I was left with rather mixed feelings. It clearly offered a lot of camera for the money, but unfortunately retained one of the biggest shortcomings of its predecessor -- the lack of any autofocus point...

Pentax K-r

The Pentax K-r is a true DSLR camera with a 720p HD video mode feature. The camera put on a good show in our video performance tests, but its clunky design and lack of in-depth controls in video mode left us disappointed.

Review: Pentax K-r DSLR

If you're looking for a small, lightweight, inexpensive starter camera, then the Pentax K-r is a great choice. With its huge array of features and nice image quality, it might end up being the only SLR you never need.

Like most midrange SLRs, the K-r is very compact and lightweight, making it easy to carry for an entire day of shooting. The grip design is good, making the K-r very comfortable to hold. As with other Pentax SLRs, the K-r feels very sturdy, weighing in...
