However, with that portability comes an almost universal frustration in the shape of a virtually ubiquitous 3x zoom lens, which fails to supply a decent wide-angle view at one end of its range or g

Aims to get you closer and show you the bigger picture

Sharp picture throughout lens range

Too much image noise

Certainly ticks lots of boxes, but image noise is a headache

Ricoh Caplio R5 digital camera

My first impressions of the R5 are of a svelte, compact digital compact, its all-metal body is both sturdy and nice to hold thanks to a subtle curve (accentuated by the body styling) on the right side of the body. I wanted to heartily recommend this...

Anti shake, great macro capability, all-metal build, good ergonomics and styling

AF problems, image noise issues, camera crashes, lens zoom control fiddly

I wanted to heartily recommend this camera to you but on balance, I can’t. The Ricoh Caplio R5 straddles the gap between full control and automation nicely, its feature set and build quality almost perfect for the market it’s aimed at – and as the...

Ricoh Caplio R5

Strong zoom features including the new auto resize zoom should interest those who take plenty of shots at distance. Be wary though of the device's occassional freeze.

7.1x optical wide angle zoom ; Auto resize zoom improves picture quality of close-ups ; Choice of colours: red, silver or black ; Included carry case and leather belt pouch

Prone to freezing ; Image review mode sometimes doesn't work

Ricoh Caplio R5

Ricoh's digital compacts typically offer a combination of something a little different from the competition - a wide-angle lens here, high ISO sensitivity there, macro down to 1cm - plus very keen pricing

Operation is commendably zippy, When there's plenty of light, sharp natural images are achievable, Lightweight enough for one-handed operation

Rather plasticky

Packed with features, the Ricoh produces good work if handled with care

Ricoh Caplio R5

If you're in the market for a sub-£250 7 megapixel camera, the Ricoh Caplio R5 is a good place to start.

7-megapixel resolution allows for poster-sized prints, biggest zoom range on test, keenly priced, vibration correction

Slightly cheap and plastic feel to the body, noisy lens mechanism, small fiddly controls

The noisy lens operation is a little off-putting, as is the plastic feel to the body, but some may consider that its price and features go some way to making amends.
