Sigma DP3 review

The Sigma DP3 Merrill isn't for everyone, but for those willing to deal with its quirks and older tech, they're rewarded with sharp photos that are like full-frame quality.

The Sigma DP3 Merrill is totally schizoid. On one hand you have exceptional still photo quality that comes close to full-frame editions. On the other you have a frustratingly slow, poorly featured camera that only a select group of photographers could...

Sigma DP3 Merrill

The Sigma DP3 Merrill packs a 46-megapixel Foveon image sensor and a fixed 75mm macro lens. It can capture amazing photos, but it's not a camera that will appeal to the masses.

Sharp 1:3 macro lens. APS-C Foveon image sensor. Sharp rear LCD. Improved JPG engine.

Cumbersome Raw workflow. No HD video support. No EVF option. Slow autofocus.

The 3-inch rear display packs a 920k-dot resolution. It's sharp and gives you a good idea about the quality of the images you are capturing. The display is just as sharp as the 1.2-million-dot display on the Ricoh GR, but it's not as bright; that...

Sigma DP3 Merrill Preview

Sigma, mostly known for their universal lenses, has released a new fixed lens camera, the DP3 Merrill. You might want to sit down for this, but the DP3 features a colossal 46-megapixel Foveon X3 image sensor. Yeah, that's not a typo. 46 megapixels,...

Sigma DP3 Merrill Review

The Sigma DP3 Merrill is a compact camera with a large APS-C sized sensor, as used in larger and heavier compact system camera and DSLR models and therefore promising better image quality than other compacts. The DP3 Merrill has the same 46 megapixel...

The new DP3 Merrill completes Sigma's compact camera range by incorporating a 75mm equivalent lens and useful macro capabilities, with the DP Merrill family now offering 28mm, 45mm and 75mm lens options. As with its siblings, the DP3 Merrill is an...

Sigma DP3 Merrill Review

For several generations now, there's been a clear pattern to Sigma's DP-series of fixed-lens, large-sensor cameras. Each generation has had just two models, closely related and differing mostly in their choice of lens.

Sigma DP3 Merrill Review: Bigger Lens, Same Body

Sigma has long been known for the quality of their lenses, but their cameras have always taken a backseat. Although they should easily stand out of the crowd with their unique Foveon sensor and amazing image quality, Sigma cameras lack a few key...

Outstanding image quality at low ISOs, Great color quality from Foveon sensor, Optically superior 50mm lens

High ISO images are inadequate, Slow autofocus, Poor battery life, Expensive

Some see the arrival of cameras such as these as indicative of camera companies responding to the market by taking on smart phones as a camera to take everywhere.

Sigma’s DP Merrill Cameras Compared – World-Beating Image Quality In Compact Bodies

Sigma, known mainly to photographers for their affordable lenses, recently caused quite a stir among discerning photographers. How? By building three compact cameras around the incredible sensor taken from the SD1, which initially cost $10,000. The...

But there are lots of compromises. Foremost among them is battery life. The small batteries don’t last long so you’ll need to buy spares. Fortunately, they’re cheap. Second compromise; usability. It’s pretty good for a compact camera, and the controls...
