DVD players get no respect. Was it only a couple of years ago that DVDs and DVD hardware were the darling of the consumer electronics industry? Studios were making money hand over fist as consumers gobbled up new DVD movie and TV show releases....

Upscales DVDs to full 1080p over HDMI. Support for DVD-A and SACD. Lots of file formats supported. DivX certified.

Can't play back WMV files. SACD support is limited to just file playback. Noise reduction in high-noise scenes is limited. Audio playback lacks depth.

OPPO ships a nifty DVD player offering high end features at a not-so-high end price. Video playback isn't perfect, but it's still pretty darned good.

If you're not ready for Blu-ray or HD DVD, but want the best possible image quality, an upscaling DVD player may be just the ticket. OPPO's new DV-980H supports almost all file formats, can read USB keys, and can scale your DVD playback up to 1080p.

Upscales DVDs to full 1080p over HDMI. Support for DVD-A and SACD. Lots of file formats supported. DivX certified.

Can't play back WMV files. SACD support is limited to just file playback. Noise reduction in high-noise scenes is limited. Audio playback lacks depth.

Oppo DV-980H review: Oppo DV-980H

Oppo DV-980H

Excellent image quality; upscaling to 1080p over HDMI; attractive, understated black design; multichannel SACD and DVD-Audio over HDMI; DivX/Xvid support; aspect-ratio control; can be made region-free with a simple hack.

Expensive compared to other DVD players; similarly priced HD DVD players deliver vastly superior image quality on HD DVDs.

If you're not ready to get a high-def player, the Oppo DV-980H DVD player delivers excellent performance and an unparalleled feature set for the price.
