Panasonic DMR-EH55S

This easy-to-use, midpriced recorder offers many features such as a TV Guide electronic program guide, a G-Link port, and an HDMI connection.

don't bother unless you really hate TiVo

Why are non-TiVo HDD DVR's so hard/annoying to use? I've owned VCR's that had better features and were easier to use. Why haven't manufacturers adapted the new features to what has worked in the past? If you can program a DVR/VCR remote to turn off a...

Can do timer-based recordings (you'll need to since the TV Guide system sucks)

Cannot watch another program while you record unless you switch from DVR to TV ; DVR response to remote is sluggish. If using to control TV, can't enter digits. You must scroll through channels ; Controls not intuitive. In the beginning, you will...

Just what i expected

Some have complained about the usefulness of the tv guide onscreen feature when compared with the tivo interface... i have no experience with tivo, but can't think of any complaints regarding the FREE tv guide alternative offered by this unit....

TV guide listings ; Huge capacity ; Intuitive operation ; Ablility to simultaneously record and watch previously recorded shows or dvd's ; NEVER HAVING TO WATCH COMMERCIALS AGAIN

No live TV buffer to allow pausing/rewinding ; Universal remote function only allows channel/volume +/- (cannot select specific channels if using the TV tuner)

Great for transferring video to DVD

In today's digital TV world I could not recommend the unit to time shift programs. But that's not what I bought my first Panasonic DMR unit for anyway. I use the units strictly for converting video tape- both digital and analog, to DVD. This requires...

Does a great job converting tape to DVD- best on the market.

Poorly written manual. Don't expect to be able to 'time shift' in today's digital world.

No!! Stop and desist! Don't even think about it!

My version of the EH55 came with a 160GB hard drive, and with a few caveats I was very happy with it. The picture was as good as the reviews I had seen (this was in the days before High Definition, of course). Nothing prepared me, though, for the ...

Convenient. Made good DVDs. Not heavy (for taking it back for repair...)

Unreliable. Died after 18 months. Couldn't make 16:9 DVDs. Not good.

Expensive

I have owned the DMR-EH55-S (S=Silver) for 11 months now. This being my first DVR, I did not think it was worth the $450 that I had paid. Boy, I was wrong. This DVR has completing changed by viewing experience. For my setup, I have the EH55 connected ...

Easy to set recordings. Plenty of disc space.

Expensive.

More than pleasantly surprised by the DMR-EH55

The Panasonic recorder really does an excellent all-round job. My configuration is a flat panel plasma without a cable box. I use the TV Guide ON SCREEN constantly to both select channels, search for programs, and record both indivudal and repeat...

Complete - works out of the box - really functional

Price - and as with other multipurpose items, you need to follow the instructions

It records on DVD's, & the internal hard drive!

I must admit, that after owning a Philips DVD recorder, that this Panasonic is a real pleasure! Of course an old brick would have been better than my old Philips. It was broken more times than I used it. Finally I chucked it and decided to purchase a ...

Many features, small in size and upconverts to a high definition TV!

Not really inexpensive at about $450, and lacks good documentation!
