Philips DVP5980 review

More than you have the right to expect for £80

Impressive connectivity ; Wide range of audio modes ; Good performance for the price

Annoying disc search operation

One of the UK's cheapest 1080p DVD decks offers excellent picture and sound quality plus a very handy USB port

If you're not yet ready to stump up for a proper hi-def disc player then the next best thing is a DVD deck with 1080p upscaling. Just a year ago this feature was only found on high-end players, but the £80 DVP5980 proves that this is no longer the case

Excellent image quality and plays just about anything thrown at it. Plays divx files directly from usb pen drive or disk without any problem.

None.

Ability to use USB port to play mp3 music files from memory stick, thus doing away with the need to change CDs.

It is an unusually wide DVD player. It fits our situation, but is worth checking before ordering.

Exceptionally good quality picture on an ageing CRT TV, even using a SCART connection. Main reason for buying this model was the ability to plug my external hard disc into the USB port and watch all my recorded films and TV programs, which it does...

The remote is a cheap and rather limited piece of equipment, but does work. No eject button on remote, but as you need to go to the unit to remove the DVD it really is not that much of a problem. The listing of files using the USB port is very limited...

Plays DivX, upscales fantasticly.

Can't handle 720p divx/xvid files for some reason.

excellent file handling - divx etc. Silent dvd operation (it makes my sharp sound like a Jumbo at takeoff)

Slightly flimsy feel -but for the price it would be churlish to expect more.

Great picture quality via HDMI. Decodes Dolby 5.1 surround through my Panasonic TV and it sounds almost as good as the home theatre system I've just scrapped.

Menu options are bit obscure, and when selecting them (e.g. picture settings) you have to close the menu to see what it looks like - it doesn't minmise so you can readjust without closing.
