Samsung BD-P1000 Blu-ray player reviewed

Being an early-adopter is risky business -- especially when the product in question costs $1,000 and is embroiled in a so-called format war -- so the opinions...

Samsung BD-P1000

Blu-ray movies have arrived, and with the BD-P1000 Samsung delivers a solid player.

Supports 1080p digital video output. Good performance with standard DVD movies. Integrated memory card readers for viewing digital images.

It costs twice as much as the least expensive HD DVD player. The remote suffers from small buttons and an odd button layout. Sluggish start-up and load times, but slightly better than current HD DVD players. ; Watch the Samsung BD-P1000 Video Review!

the bd-p1000's ability to upscale dvd video to hd resolutions was better than what i've seen with most tvs. the hp pavilion md5880n scored 23 percent better on the hqv benchmark dvd when hooked up to the bd-p1000 than it did when left to deinterlace...

Samsung BD-P1000 review: Samsung BD-P1000

Samsung BD-P1000

Plays Blu-ray discs in true high-definition; upscales standard DVDs to high-definition; sleek design; 1080p output via HDMI.

Twice as expensive as the competing HD-DVD player; very few titles available at launch; video quality on initial titles less impressive than HD-DVD versions; slower load times; some operational bugs.

With video quality that's impressive but still not as good as its HD-DVD competition, the costly Samsung BD-P1000 will appeal only to those willing to risk a grand on a first-generation player in the middle of a format war.

Samsung BD-P1000 Blu-ray Disc Player Review

Not a day goes by that I don't get inundated with emails or news reports of something going on in the new high resolution DVD “format war”. I am determined to avoid the tendency to break into

Picture CAN look good on well-authored material ; 1080p upconversion of standard DVDs ; Excellent build quality ; Bargain price if compared to reference and esoteric upscaling DVD players costing much more

Expensive debut (not atypical) ; Awkward remote ; MPEG-2 software underwhelming for most part ; Slow startup and menu navigation speed ; Most advanced features not fully implemented (or at all) ; Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD nowhere in sight ; Strict EDID...

Samsung Blu-ray Disc Player

Samsung holds the distinction of being the first company to introduce a Blu-ray player to the American market about a year ago (see our BD-P1000 review in Issue 70). Unfortunately, one of its internal settings softened the picture—hardly what the new...

Overall, I was highly impressed with the BD-P1200’s performance, especially the razor-sharp detail. True, the intermittent crashes and audio drop-outs exhibited by the first review unit did not inspire confidence, but the second unit didn’t have these...

Samsung BD-P1000 Blu-ray Player

Let Me Back UpUnlike Toshiba's HD-XA1, the BD-P1000 acts and looks like a regular DVD player. Its acceptance of commands from its remote and overall usability are slower than current-model DVD players, but it puts the brutally slow HD-XA1 to shame....
