Sharp BD-HP20U Blu-ray Disc Player

This Blu-ray player delivers video that looks and sounds great.

Top-notch picture and audio quality ; Turns on practically immediately

No Divx support

But that's complaining about small stuff. Where it really counts, this is one great Blu-ray Disc player

Five Blu

Blu-ray's victory in the high-definition disc war has opened the floodgates for hardware manufacturers. The market is becoming crowded with new players, and Sharp's BD-HP20U AQUOS Blu-ray Disc player ($399.99 direct) attempts to stand out from the pack...

Quick-Start feature speeds player start-up time.

Very slow at starting playback. Poky menu navigation. Clips detail over HDMI. Poor video processing with interlaced material. No indicator for 24-Hz video output.

This Blu-ray player's quick start-up time doesn't make up for its overall sluggishness and inadequate performance.

Review: Sharp BD-HP20U

Sharp chose the blue pill-make that the Blu pill-and ended up a winner in the high-def DVD format war. Of course, so did Sony, Samsung,...

Quick Start mode begs the question: Why do other Blu-ray players take so freakin’ long to load movies? Upscales old-fangled DVDs to 1080p. Supports Dolby TrueHD for lossless digital audio. The remote can also control a Sharp Aquos TV; one less clicker...

Silvery façade kinda fugly. No support for DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks. (The other lossless-audio white meat.) Quick Start mode disabled out of the box-WTF?. Non-backlit remote scores negative one-million on the style meter. 0 for a DVD player-any...

Sharp BD-HP20U review: Sharp BD-HP20U

Sharp BD-HP20U

The Sharp BD-HP20U's Quick Start feature loads certain discs superfast; excellent video quality using 1080p/24 output.

The Sharp BD-HP20U only supports Blu-ray profile 1.0; no onboard decoding for high-resolution DTS soundtracks or bit-stream output; poor 1080i deinterlacing on Blu-ray movies; no Ethernet port for firmware updates; poor performance with video-based...

The Sharp BD-HP20U is a decent Blu-ray player that can load some discs superfast, but there are better options out there.

Sharp BD-HP20U Blu-ray Player Review

Sharp introduced the BD-HP20U, their first Blu-ray player - and so far, their only one - in late 2007. Basically, a Profile 1.0 machine like this Sharp doesn't include all the interactive bells and whistles that the newer Profile models do. But if you...

Sharp BD-HP20U Blu-ray Player

Sharp has developed its Aquos brand of LCD TVs into one of the best, most respected names in the business. So it's understandable that the company wants to capitalize on that reputation by applying the Aquos moniker to other products. The first such...

Sharp’s first foray into the land of Blu-ray is excellent in many respects, especially the Quick Start feature and the friendly remote, but it falls short in others. Of most concern to me was the slightly reddish skin tones and the dramatic degradation...

Review: Sharp BD-HP20U Blu-ray Disc Player

When you examine the product offerings from the biggest players in the consumer electronics world, most of them have chosen sides in the format war and they're now marketing second or third generation hi def disc players. Sharp has long been a Blu-ray...

As a standard definition DVD player, the BD-HP20U is adequate but not exceptional. Although picture quality looked fine when playing a few episodes from Boston Legal's third season, the BD-HP20U struggled with a few tests on Silicon Optix's HQV...

Consumer review (newegg.com)

Newegg Hassle

Load time is slower than a DVD, but well worth the wait for the improvement in quality. As long as the order goes through without needing any customer support, Newegg rocks. But to be honest, this experience severely shook my belief in Newegg.

When used at the full 1080p with a HD display you cannot beat the quality. This player upconverts DVDs so they look good on the HD display. Blu-ray is amazing

Newegg messed this order up. I worked with them for two weeks trying to get everything worked out on the order. It was a hassle and no where close to what I had come to expect from Newegg
