The 4mm that comes with unit is fine, but I wanted a little thicker potatoe slices for fried potatoes and scalloped potatoes. Love it. I keep the red protective clingy thing on blade when I store them. Blades are very sharp.

Cuisinart is not manufacturing this blade to meet the quality of the older one. And, it literally slips off its "stand" if grinding something very viscous like dates. But this was not the shippers' fault.
