Garmin eTrex H review

The Garmin eTrex H is Garmin's newest entry-level handheld GPS, a worthy successor to the basic yellow Garmin eTrex. A great first GPS for the budget-minded geocacher or hiker, this classic has been updated with a high-sensitivity chipset for superior...

Garmin eTrex H

An expensive compass

Simple to use, IPX-7 casing, configurable routes and waypoints

No base map or detailed maps, monochrome LCD, serial PC connection, inadequate control of navigation

Although the eTrex H might suit those hikers who want nothing except the bare minimum, most will find it largely unusable. Inadequate functionality and no base map makes the unit extremely hard to use for anyone except the most experienced hikers, and...

Great buy

Can navigate to Lat/Lon coordinates (for geocaching) but that is not shown anywhere in manuals. Hold ENTER on the Map Page and edit the Waypoint information, then "Go To" that waypoint. Works great, even with only 5 buttons.

Price, Size, shape, WATERPROOF, and backlit screen. High Sensitivity Antenna works inside or in deep cover. Battery life is great. Already several hours on (2) regular Alkaline batteries with more to go. Compass, and Altimeter built in

Limited Menus, black and white display. User manual basically worthless. Get on a good GPS forum or join a club to find out how to really use this unit to its potential. No Card slot or supplied cable for PC interface. No maps. Batteries not included

GARMIN eTrex H 2.4" Personal Navigator

There are no maps at all on it, which is not an issue unless you really need them. I pair this with a Mio Digiwalker and do just fine. This is a great unit for starting Geocaching - and at an amazing Newegg price. If you're just getting into the...

Very accurate, works great in and around buildings and under dense trees. Usually around 20-30ft accuracy, sometimes as good as 3ft. I'm very impressed ; Also very durable. Dropped it a good 3-4ft onto concrete and it's fine

Only really accurate if you are moving, but then... if you're not moving why do you need a GPS ; Also can only connect to a computer through a serial port unless you buy an adapter, which is odd because the Garmin software doesn't always recognize the...

Nice little toy

I also bought Garmin GPS 60. It has a bigger screen and a more sophisticated user interface. But it is less sensitive and less accurate (5 m with WAAS, while eTrex has 3 m with WAAS). I am going to use GPS 60 where possible and this eTrex H under dense...

1. High sensitivity - works even in a house

1. Small screen

Nice Holster

Insert the lanyard into the holster first, then the reciever.

A perfect companion to any Garmin etrex GPSr if you wear a belt. Tough nylon construction, a spring steel belt clip (that's right, not plastic), and a velcro closure ensure this holster can take anything you can throw at it. The fit is initially very...

I prefer a snap or toggle closure to velco; but in the case of this holster, it works fine
