Magellan RoadMate 1700 review: Magellan RoadMate 1700

Compared with the 3.5-inch screen size standard of older personal navigation devices, as well as current entry-level devices, today's 4.3-inch and 5-inch units seem downright huge. More screen real estate means easier viewing and faster data inputs....

The Magellan RoadMate's OneTouch menu puts the most commonly accessed destinations and searches at your fingertips at all times. The smartly designed destination confirmation screen gives you a good deal of flexibility as to how they get where they're...

In urban environments, the 1700 takes longer to establish satellite lock and can be inaccurate. Its 7-inch screen size may be too much for smaller dashboards and can make mounting it awkward. Its battery life is extremely short.

The Magellan RoadMate 1700 isn't a GPS device for everyone, but with its huge screen and road-trip-friendly features, we think truckers and RV drivers will love it.

Magellan RoadMate 1700

You won't find this much screen real estate (7 inches!) for this little cash with any other GPS.

Big, bright 7-inch screen. Sharp map graphics. Easy POI searches. Useful AAA TourBook.

No real-time traffic reports. Doesn't display the current road speed limit. Display could be more informative. Might not fit on some dashboards or windshields.

Magellan RoadMate 1700 GPS Review

Large, bright 7-inch screen ; Excellent POI handling with built-in AAA tour book

No traffic receiver ; Video input didn't work as expected

If your vehicle can accommodate a GPS device with an enormous 7-inch screen, the RoadMate will prove to be a worthwhile travel companion.

Magellan RoadMate 1700

It's got a big screen, which is the ultimate draw card of the Magellan RoadMate 1700. Other features of the unit are available in lower end models and for a decreased price, but you won't have the visibility that the 7 inch screen provides. Power...

Magellan RoadMate 1700 GPS

Mostly aimed at owners of large vehicles, the Magellan RoadMate 1700 is a GPS with a large 7-inch display. Its feature set is pretty basic, but it does offer all the essentials along with good performance. The RoadMate 1700 can be bought for a retail...

Despite the large 7-inch screen, which can be nearly twice the size of that found on many other GPS devices, the RoadMate 1700 is very thin, even when compared to competing units. It measures only 0.6 inches thick, and is 7.5 inches wide and 4.2 inches...

Magellan RoadMate 1700 – slow and inaccurate in urban areas

The Magellan RoadMate 1700 looks like any other RoadMate GPS device. It has 7 inches wide-screen that is larger than 3.5 and 4.3 inches PND displays. The large touch-screen gives more space for accessing menus and maps. $232.94 priced the RoadMate 1700...

Large 7-inch touch screen; OneTouch menu with frequently accessed searches and destination; well-designed destination confirmation screen

Slow and inaccurate to lock position in urban areas; large screen may be bigger for small dashboards; short battery life

If you need a large screen PND for your vehicle and can overcome slow speed, then buy – Magellan RoadMate 1700.

Review: Magellan RoadMate 1700

The Magellan RoadMate 1700 was designed to be bigger than most if not all of the personal navigational devices ever manufactured. Its manufacturers believed that bigger was better.

Magellan RoadMate 1700

The Magellan RoadMate 1700 sports one of the largest screens available of any after-market navigation device — a whopping seven inches! Clearly aimed at truck and RV drivers, the 1700 also offers lane assist and multi-destination routing.

Review: Magellan RoadMate 1700 GPS

If your vehicle can accommodate a GPS device with an enormous 7-inch screen, the RoadMate will prove to be a worthwhile travel companion.

Bigger is not always better, though. In a large vehicle, such as an RV or a truck, the RoadMate 1700 is probably the perfect size, as the distance between the driver and the GPS is greater than in an automobile. In my Toyota Camry, though, the RoadMate...
