GPS on the Cheap

TomTom is the latest manufacturer to jump into the growing "shirt-pocket" GPS market with its new TomTom ONE. With an estimated retail price of $499, the TomTom ONE is sure to give the competition a wake-up call.

Great value. Easy to use. Sensitive receiver. Excellent language support. User-selectable fields.

No Bluetooth speakerphone interface. Lacks text-to-speech conversion.

The TomTom One is a value-packed shirt-pocket GPS that has the right features at the right price.

TomTom ONE XL

TomTom continue to upgrade their popular entry level unit, and it's easy to see why. Their ONE range has always offered a superb user interface, combi...

Design and aesthetics, large touch screen, user interface, mapping software, excellent navigation and searching

Battery life could be improved, AC charger not included, Bluetooth can't be used for hands-free

The ONE XL adds a larger display and a new design to an already outstanding GPS unit. At this price, it's the best value for money on the market and combines excellent navigation and an outstanding user experience.

TomTom ONE

TomTom is the market leader in portable navigation, and to a large degree its success in this area can be attributed to the popular ONE unit. Featuring an ultra-compact design that slips into your pocket for easy portability, an all-new EasyPort mount...

Slimline design, ease of use, EasyPort mount, TomTom HOME software, Map Share, Help Me! safety menu ;

No included AC adapter ;

Battery life is rated at up to three hours. TomTom disappointingly doesn't include an AC charger in the sales package, so you'll have to charge the unit via the USB cable or cigarette lighter adapter

TomTom One XL Europe

Unlike some glamourous tennis players, TomTom hasn't lost sight of what it's meant to do...

All the complaints I've listed above indicate that this TomTom isn't perfect. But they're not major enough problems to persuade me that TomTom is about to relinquish its crown as the king of in-car sat-nav.

TomTom ONE Europe v3 review

Can the smaller, cheaper model in TomTom's range still match its successful big brother for ease of use?

TomTom One XL

The TomTom One XL's extra screen width is useful on the road, but it adds little else for the extra AU$100 you pay over the standard One.

Simple, intuitive menus ; Extra screen girth is welcome

Probably not worth the extra AU$100 over the standard One ; Slow route calculation

Overall, the One XL is a logical update for TomTom's One series of GPSs. The extra screen real estate is useful while on the road, but whether it's worth the extra AU$100 over the One (Slim Edition) is highly debatable.

Tom Tom ONE XL Regional

The Tom Tom ONE XL Regional is the latest portable GPS satnav device from Tom Tom. It has a bright clear screen, but if you need to arrive on time, don't rely on the Tom Tom ONE XL Regional.

Suffice to say, we're far from impressed with the Tom Tom ONE XL Regional – and it's far from the first Tom Tom unit we've reviewed that we've also had issues with. On only one of the five different journeys we've used it on has it behaved impeccably....

Tom Tom ONE Europe

With tiny dimensions and the smallest windscreen mount we've seen, the Tom Tom is perfect for modest navigators' pockets. However, its very dinkiness causes complications; the absence of buttons and a stylus is noticeable when contending with a 3.5in...

Although it's compact and competent, the Tom Tom could do with either losing a few pounds (Sterling) or beefing up its features to justify its hefty price tag.

TomTomOne

TomTom's One is ready to go just 20 seconds after switch-on. It has fast route calculation and good, clear directions

Autobahn fast. Quick route calculation and killer directions. Best voice we've heard.

Not many extras in the box. Have to buy in European maps.

TomTom One

In-car GPS navigation systems are a boon for anybody that spends a lot of time driving from A to B. TomTom's One is designed to deliver directions en route and allow the driver to concentrate on the road.

Easy-to-use ; Outstanding navigation

No printed manual ; Tricky to reset mid-route

If you spend a lot of time driving around unfamiliar areas, the TomTom One could save enormous amounts of time and frustration. Granted, the design does have a couple of minor issues, and the lack of a printed manual is a little irksome, but the...
