TomTom Start 55 TM

 

In a time when smartphone navigation is not only top-notch, but free, TomTom's affordable Start 55 TM makes a compelling case for buying a standalone GPS—on paper. But in the real world, its performance isn't up to spec.

Big screen for a budget-priced GPS. Informative display. Easy-to-use interface. Roadside Assistance included.

Very slow GPS lock. Sluggish POI input and map animations. Ineffective real-time traffic reports. Plastic resistive screen.

Other Features and Conclusions Some features are unexpected and welcome on a budget device. One interesting addition is 24/7 Roadside Assistance, which is a nice thing to have if your car doesn't already come with it (it's the Basic plan on TomTom's...

We have had four Tom Toms in the past few years and loved them all, until this year. We tried three and each one failed in a couple of weeks. Just went black. We now ordered a Garmin.

Free maps are hard to get

 

I am having a difficult time with the free map upgrade. I connected it to my computer and it keeps starting over to the backup portion. Looked up several stores and they are not on there.

I owned an old TomTom that I disliked, but thought perhaps they had fixed the bugs because the reviews on this one were so great. Oh, how I was wrong!!!!!!!!!!

Had No Problem Setting the GPS up

 

I think it will really come in handy. I have not had the chance to use it on any trip so far. A few comments for the setup. (1) They should have said it needs to be charged up before use...(I think it is stated somewhere , but should be in bold print...
