Review: Audio-Technica ATH-W5000 Dynamic Headphones

Here at the G-Lab, we expect a luxury item to do three things: work real good, look real good, and cost real good. Audio-Technica's ATH-W5000...

Excellent, precise sound. Enticing craftsmanship. Thoughtful weight-saving measures (like a magnesium alloy frame) keep the headphones at just 340g despite dense ebony backs. Light and soft-one of the most comfortable closed-back, full-size phones...

Exotic materials require special care. Headphones cost as much as a diamond tennis bracelet. Let’s be honest-these are too nice to ever leave the sound room

Audio-Technica ATH-W5000

Audio-Technica's ATH-W5000s are a set of super high-end over-ear headphones that cost approximately $1000 (though they can be found for under $700). These are the sort of headphones you can tell are expensive just by looking at them. The ear cups are...

The ATH-W5000s certainly have the look of a pair of expensive headphones, but we were less impressed with the fit. Just about everyone in the office thought they were a bit too big, meaning the ear cups naturally sat a bit lower than was comfortable....

Audio-Technica ATH-W5000

A scientific, in-depth analysis with side-by-side comparisons

Though we’ve mentioned it constantly throughout the review, we feel the need to do so one last time: these headphones cost $1000. One thousand US dollars. If you’re the kind of audiophile that feels comfortable spending $1000 on a set of headphones,...

Audio-Technica ATH-W5000 review

Audio-Technica's £700 flagship is a mixed bag

Fantastic bass ; Clean and rhythmic ; Very extended treble ; High sensitivity and more than generous maximum sound output

Treble can be a little bright ; Everything is undermined by a degree of muddle in complex sounds

Too much of a mixed blessing for straight recommendation, this headphone has potential that we hope future developments may be able to unlock. In the meantime, the excellent ATH-W1000 at £400 is what we'd recommend

Audio Technica ATH-W5000 headphones

From dance to metal, folk to pop, rock to Balinese gamelan, these cans shine with their relentless detail, wide soundstage and clarity. What they lack in low-end presence they make up for in brightness and high-end clarity.

Accurate sound quality. Super-detailed high-end. Ideal as reference headphones for mixing. Excellent cabling.

Bass isn't too powerful. No 6.5mm-3.5mm adaptor in the box.

Stunning high-end reference cans, but be aware of their lack of power in the low-end.

If you're looking for cheap headphones to use on the go, this review won't help you. Audio Technica's £700 ATH-W5000s are extremely high-end, closed-back, reference-grade headphones for the truly discerning audiophile.

Accurate sound quality; super-detailed high-end; ideal as reference headphones for mixing; excellent cabling.

Consumer review (newegg.com)

One of the current in-production best!

My primary cans - visit for more info on these.

Highly resolving cans that will reveal everything down to the very miniscule detail of an album. Very professional looking with high quality wood cups. Surprisingly open with a huge soundstage for a closed headphone - ideal for orchestral genres....

Will require solid amplification to make them sing @ their best. Do not purchase these if you don't plan on shelling out on a decent headphone amp! Potential fit issues will arise if you have a small head - can be resolved by bending the metal rings...

Awesome headphones, beware of fit

This is one of the two best current-production closed headphones on Earth (the other being the Stax 4070). Just be glad that you can buy it through newegg rather than importing it from Japan.

Very high resolution ; Excellent 3-d soundfield positioning and size, especially for a closed headphone ; Very efficient and can handle very high volumes without trouble ; Super sexy looking

Earcups have limited swivel from the headband, which means that these headphones may not fit you properly. Quite a few folks have tried my pair only to have the headphones not seal at the top or bottom of the head. It's hard to tell if they will fit...

Consumer review (head-fi.org)

Elegance, authority, beauty, power, refinement, subtlety. Raffinato indeed.

I tried a few Grado's —didn't like the Grado house sound—, a few Senn's —HD650 left a good impression—, a few lower-end AT's —I thought the AD700 were impressive for the price— and after reading Head-Fi and other audio forums for a long time, I thought...

Lightweight, feels solid, confortable; speed of attack & decay, instrument separation, 3D imaging; outstanding on acoustic instruments and vocals

Slightly creaky frame at times; lettering wears off on the cups, but is that really a con?! More display of the beautiful striped ebony wood
