Cheap, Cool Campus Tech

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Nobody has made a better pair of noise-cancellation headphones than Bose's Quiet Comfort 3. That said, the QC3 is ridiculously expensive, at $350. JVC recently unveiled the HA-NC80-J/-C (NC80), a pair of...

Two modes of noise cancellation decrease different types of ambient sound. Good audio quality. Cheap.

Uncomfortable. Low hum occurs when used with certain powered devices and noise cancellation is activated.

For a modest $40, these JVC headphones deliver decent noise cancellation plus good audio output.

JVC HA-NC80 review

JVC is a decent brand to consider if you're looking for noise-canceling headphones but are working with a limited budget. The company's HA-NC100 headphones , for example, are comfortable, offer solid sound quality, and can be found for less than $80...

The JVC HA-NC80 headphones are relatively inexpensive, and they include a dual-prong adapter for in-flight use, as well as a travel pouch.

The JVC HA-NC80's earcups are on the small side, making the headphones uncomfortable to wear for extended periods of time. The noise-canceling feature affects only low frequency sound.

Frequent fliers operating on a tight budget should consider the JVC HA-NC80 Noise Canceling Headphones, but those with sensitive ears might want to steer clear.

JVC HA-NC80 Noise-cancelling review

Budget noise-cancelling 'phones that do a job; but spend a little more and you can do much better

Does an okay isolation job but £20 more will buy you vastly superior headphones.

JVC HA-NC80

These 'phones are a good, cheap option for those who want to eliminate some pesky background noise from their daily tune listening.

Relatively inexpensive ; Include a dual-prong adaptor for in-flight use ; Travel pouch supplied

Earcups are on the small side, making the extended wear uncomfortable ; Noise-cancelling feature affects only low frequency sound

On the sound-quality tip, the JVC HA-NC80s do a surprisingly decent job. I wouldn't call it fantastic, but when paired with a Creative Zen V Plus, the headphones provided clear highs and a balanced midrange. Even low-end response was decent, though...

Great product for the price

Works well

Over ear would be better than on ear

Consumer review (newegg.com)

Good phones

There is some noise reduction, but it's not dramatic. External high frequencies are attenuated even when it's off by the closed design. You'll probably be able to store your mp3 player in the pouch along with the headphones. I'm hoping the cord will...

Sound is OK. Comfortable. Handy pouch. The cord is just the right length if you plan to stick your player in a pants pocket -- there's a little slack, but not enough to hang down by your knees

Cord is a bit stiff -- it sometimes has kinks that bunch up near my neck
