Good For The Price

3.6 is my rating. I love this player. I have thrown most everything at it & it plays like a champ. There are a few things you must know & prepare for if you are looking to play files on this. 1. The player looks for the order of the files through the...

Fast Loading, plays all but MKV & WMV ; Odd combination AVI container files even play ; Excellent at handling DVD's as well ; Fast code to make this region free

Needs a smarter interface ; The indexing is poor ; Must keep the file names & folders short or they run off the screen ; There are good hardware updating hacks around, but be wary unless you have experience with these & are willing to part with your...

Stay away

My situation can't be an isolated case. But, I read nothing about these problems anywhere.

Worked great, while it worked. USB, HDMI, DVD player all worked perfectly

I've now owned 2 of these models, bought from two different big box stores. Both have completely died over time. The current unit will not power up although it does have power supplied to it. My advice is to stay away from these DVD players. Shabby,...

Don't buy a DVP5990 here!

I ordered two "5990" only to receive the dreaded 5990/F7. The Online Chat person had me listing out what the differences were between the models because she saw no Feature differences between the two units (5990 and 5990/F7). We closed by saying she'd...

I ordered the 5990 and Newegg shipped it fast before Xmas

They sent me the wrong unit (5990/F7) which spoiled my holiday

Great Bang for the Buck

I am very happy with the player except for its minor cons cited above. Docked one egg, but I still highly recommend this unit . How can you go wrong for the price?

Excellent DVD player, great quality images through HDMI upconversion, properly maintains aspect ratio at 4:3 when that format is played. Plays everything I have tried from the USB port: videos and music in many formats

All video content played from USB is stretched to 16:9 format. Same buttons on remote used for chapter selection and searching. Sometimes, if you are not careful to hold down the button long enough, you end up switching chapters instead of searching -...

Region 0

The actual model I received was DVP5990/F7.

Great DVD player for the price. The main selling point for me was the ability to set (unlock) this to Region 0 so that I can play movies from other regions. I did not have to upgrade firmware to do this

Region 1 was default. Still cannot skip past all commercials & warnings on a DVD

Excellent Philips brand player!

You need this player. It doesn't matter if you just want a great DVD player or a great player that will play audio and video and display images from Flash drives or external USB hard drives, etc, this is an all-in-one high quality solution. 5 EGGS TO...

EVERYTHING!! It plays my DVD's just fine, but this player really shines when it comes to its USB port and onboard decoding skills! I've had this for maybe 2 months now, and I bought a 750GB WD external hard drive that I leave attached via USB. So far...

Only one thing... the USB drives files isn't sorted by name as I would prefer, but instead it apparently sorts by the time a file is added. A quick fix, however time-consuming, is to make a new folder, then move all of yours files and folders to the...

Great component

I've had this thing for about a year now, and it has performed very well. There have been a few random lockups, mostly when trying to play unsupported formats, and you sometimes have to unplug the thing to get it working again. Other than that, it has...

Plays all kinds of formats from disc or from USB. Great quality picture and sound. Upconvert makes a huge difference. Quiet. Remote batteries included and apparently last forever. Unbelievably convenient for watching divx/xvid "backups" straight from...

Only 32x fast forward, fast forward barely works on certain WMV formats, will not read h264 format (freezes and sometimes must be unplugged if you try). A bit of lag between remote control inputs and action, say when skipping tracks on a list of MP3s,...

Ordering 2nd

I will be buying the second DVD player for my basement.

Great DVD player. You will need to buy your own HDMI cable ; I really enjoy the ability to play from external USB (FAT-formatted) media ; I am able to hook up my 120 Gb iPod Classic (and a couple of flash drives) and skip burn-to-DVD media step

Awesome DVD player

this player is small...I don't think it would "stack" well with other AV equipment in many home theaters...but that isn't the case with me...so no complaints here!

Easy setup, lots of playback options with USB, clean and sleek look
