Philips MCD908 review

Great looks, and a performance to match

Stylish design ; High-quality audio

Upscaled video not the best ; Lacking in stereo dynamics

A luxury DVD micro system that blends old and new tech to deliver a strong DVD and an enticing musical performance

Philips MCD908

The Philips MCD908 offers top-level features and build quality for a reasonable price -- unfortunately it doesn't quite have the performance to back it up.

Good price ; Indestructible build ; Audiophile-type components ; Packed with features

May be too gaudy for some ; Performance out of line with build

Conclusion The Philips MCD908 is a very likeable beast, and sure looks impressive sitting on your entertainment rack. There are a lot of features crammed into these little boxes for a very small price -- and it's a very well built system. It's just a...

Flawed But Still A Gem

Warm, fatigue-free, sound was obtained when a powered subwoofer was connected and crossed at 80Hz. Highly recommended. The analog output of an Apple Airport Express sounds excellent when played through the AUX input.

Hybrid (tube preamp/Class D amp) amplifier; AUX input; subwoofer output; Build quality; Ribbon tweeter; HDMI output

No digital inputs; No phono input; Only 1 analog input; Bass-shy; Bass and Treble controls are too limited and coarse

Awesome Sound, Great Deal

I have had no problem with audible hiss as the other reviewer complained of. I love this unit. I popped in compact disc of Rossini's L'italiana in Algeri (comic opera) and am in blissful audio Nirvana.

Tube preamp, minimalist design, study construction has the look and feel of a quality product. This is an awesome value for the price. Tube preamp gives a warm realistic sound. If I am not mistaken Phillips NV are the Dutch boys that invented the...

None really for the price (free shipping included) The preamp unit glows red---the disc player glows white. I would have preferred them both to agree in glow color --- either both red or both white.

Like Nothing Else, but Flawed

All-in-one solution to adding DVD & better audio to my small TV on built-in bookshelves. I have it teamed with a Sharp Aquos 20" LCD-TV and an Aperion Audio S8APR sub woofer. This isn't a fake surround sound system, it's a stereo with a sub woofer...

This is a good-looking HTIB. Three-way speakers with high-gloss rosewood sides and black glass tops, same rosewood on the sides of the amp and player, an amber window backlit with a red LED highlighting the "glowing" tubes, and blue LED accents that...

Big problem: Audible hiss with null input that is noticeable during playback of quiet passages. This is in the amplifier and not a ground loop. Too much effort into flash, not enough into designing a good power supply. The DVD playback hangs when doing...

Philips MCD908

This system is even better than a Bose system. It provides excellent, clear power along with the audio range satisfying for classical or jazz music.

Small enough system for an executive office. Very clear sounding on low volume. It is a standalone on music alone. Alothough not used as DVD/Home Theater system, I am sure it will perform better than a standard DVD player

Speaker screw-jacks are plastic on the main unit. Probably can be replaced with gold ones
