Asus N82JV-X1

Above-average Nvidia graphics; fast Core i5 processor; USB 3.0 port.

Poor battery life; quirky multitouch touch pad; confusing energy-saving settings.

For $999, Asus' graphics-boosted 14-inch laptop lacks battery power, and has few distinguishing features that push it over similarly priced (or less expensive) alternatives.

Asus N82Jv-X1

The Asus N82Jv-X1 is a mainstream laptop capable of many things, thanks to a fast Core i5 processor and top-tier Nvidia chipset.

Fast Core i5 processor. Powerful Nvidia graphics card. Seamless graphics switching mechanism by Optimus. USB 3.0 ready. Good user experience. Reasonably priced.

Small battery. Processor slows down drastically in battery mode. Design may not appeal to some.
