You can get basic tasks done with this solid budget laptop from Dell.

Bargain-priced

Sluggish performer

Upshot: You can get basic office work done and burn your own CDs with Dell's bargain-basement Inspiron 1200. But there are nicer-looking and better-equipped $500 notebooks, namely the Acer Aspire 3003LCi or HP's Compaq M2000.

This solid corporate notebook has great battery life and plenty of expansion options.

Offers excellent modular expansion

Sluggish performance

A standout in battery life and modular expansion, the Dell Latitude D510 is a fine mainstream business laptop.

This notebook blends basic performance and features, though other systems can give you more for less.

Good battery life. Four USB ports. Decent performance.

Keyboard heats up. Bland-looking. Pricey.

Dell Latitude D510

It may not be the fastest, lightest, or longest-lasting business notebook available, but the Dell Latitude D510 is a corporate jack-of-all-trades that does everything well enough.

Solid battery life and performance; strong case; three-year warranty.

Somewhat heavy; lacks biometric security; three-prong AC plug; no flash card reader; no Gigabit Ethernet.

The mainstream Dell Latitude D510 doesn't excel in any one area but manages to be a good all-around business notebook.
