Dell Precision M4300 (First Look Review)

Weighing just 6.3 lbs, this mobile workstation is fully certified for those who use design software on the road or in the field.

In late June 2007, Dell made a flurry of new product announcements, among them the introduction of the Dell Precision M4300 mobile workstation. I was finally able to get my hands on one to evaluate for Cadalyst readers.

Dell Precision M4300 review

The Precision M4300 is an upgraded version of the popular Precision M70 mobile workstation – featuring the latest generation of chips and chipsets from Intel's Santa Rosa platform.

Fast processor. Bright screen

Uninspiring performance

Not Bad

Good guts, fast performance, looks good even though refurbished

Power adapter (Cheap made in china, not dell brand). Boot error, will not charge, contacted customer service and they wanted me to ship the entire computer back. Apparently it is too difficult to ship a Dell certified replacement cord

Excellent Allround

A good piece of hardware all round capable of performing many tasks with great speed! I remember reading that I would get a free carry case - I have not received it yet?

Laptop is lightweight enough to comfortably carry around.

Preloaded with the usual dribble which could be useful for some people...

Amazing Workstation-class Notebook

The screen is amazing. Even better than my XPS M1530. Of course I did get the 1680x1050. I like that it still has a serial port. I am now able to use my OBDII cable (for reading codes from a car) without a usb to serial adapter. The things that swayed...

Wonderful design

I expected a little more from the Quadro graphics adapter

Excellent Laptop

if you need a workhorse, this is your model. if you only need a laptop to aid you desktop and will not be using it often then this may be more than you need.

This is my 4th Dell laptop and i own/have owned Sony, gateway, compaq, and HP and this is by a long shot the best i have owned. i bought a Dell Inspiron about 3 months ago with almost the same specs i added to this one but this one still way out...

i wish i would have purchased the larger battery. this model has so much power, it will drain the smaller one quickly.

Great for CAD/CAE work

Very good processor T7500, chose the 512 MB FX Quadro Graphics Card. System can handle CAD/CAE work with great ease. Great value for money.

None.

First Dell computer - Precision M4300

This is my first Dell computer and I am very happy with the purchase.

Quick delivery by Dell and easy set up. I've only used the laptop as a workstation computer w/ the docking station and a separate LCD monitor. Works great. The computer boots quickly and is extremely quiet.

It would be excellent if Dell had a docking station that would allow you to use the laptop's monitor in addition to a second monitor, side by side. I've only been able to benefit from one monitor since I use the docking statoin and have limited space...

Incredible laptop

I got the WUXGA screen which for CAD is essential. The screen is ok compared to my M60 but better than the M70. I would have liked to see the LED backlight make it to this series for power, contrast, and uniformity (It is still very bright at the...

I bought this unit with the 64Gb SSD because I want to see what the future hold in the biggest bottleneck of the system. Even though I know SSD's will get cheaper, faster, and bigger, this is an incredible addition to any computer. Programs pop right...

Still looking for cons... I am tempted to sell this latptop even though I love it and wait for DDR3, faster/cheaper/larger SSD/hybrid drives, as well as LED LCD displays. Two of the 3 are marginal improvements but I don't like buying when newer, better...
