Tested: The $1500 Dell XPS 15 vs. the $1500 MacBook Pro 13

The fans asked, and we have answered. We compare laptops on price, not form factor, to see if the fight is fairer. See what happens.

Just in case the various benchmarks I just ran you through don’t convince you, I’ll sum it for you: the $1,500 Dell XPS 15 destroyed the $1,500 MacBook Pro 13 in everything performance related with its one Achilles heel being just ho-hum battery life.

Dell XPS 15 Review: A great laptop gets bigger and a little better

It doesn't take a genius to realize that when you hit pay dirt, you might do so again if you keep digging in the same area. That's the tack Dell takes with its redesigned XPS 15 laptop: It's easily summed up as a bigger, more powerful version of the...

Reasonably compact and light ; Class-leading CPU and graphics performance ; Easy to open

Backlight bleeding ; Some models should have optional larger battery available ; Keyboard should be a little larger

Dell XPS 15 Non-Touch Laptop -DNCWX1631H

But laptops have lagged behind in shaving down the frame around the display, making mobile PCs look downright clunky compared to other electronic gadgets. Apple's MacBook Pro is a step in the right direction, with edge-to-edge glass over a reasonably...

An eye-catching 15-inch 4K display in a nearly bezel-free frame, plus high-end processor and graphics options, all in a slim, professional-looking body.

The better configurations can cost a lot, while the keyboard could be bigger and the touchpad has a floaty feel.

The Dell XPS 15 is a premium-feeling 4K laptop that outdoes the MacBook Pro in several categories. Its bezel-free design should be the gold standard going forward.

Dell XPS 15 Touch (9530)

The latest Dell XPS 15 Touch (9530) is a premium desktop-replacement laptop with a refined design, a gorgeous 4K touch screen, and good performance, but it doesn't come cheap.

Sleek, premium design. Impressive 4K touch screen. Soft silicone-covered palm rest. Decent port selection. Solid performance.

Expensive. Battery is not user-accessible, and its performance in testing was average.

Conclusion There's a lot to like about the Dell XPS 15 Touch (9530), from its 4K touch screen to its refined design and premium build quality. If you have a collection of material that takes advantage of the top-notch display, then this laptop might be...

Dell XPS 15 (9530)

With its brilliant screen and serious components, the luxury-minded Dell XPS 15 (9530) is Dell's showcase PC meant to go up against high-end laptop offerings.

Resolution is 3,200 by 1,800 (QHD+). Quad-core CPU, mid-tier enthusiast GPU. Has 802.11ac & Bluetooth 4.0. Comes with 12 months of McAfee LiveSafe. Premium look and materials.

Reflective screen. No built-in Ethernet. Some UI elements can be tiny. USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports are both black.

The XPS 15 (9530) certainly trumps its Windows-based competition like the Asus Zenbook VX51VZ-XB71 in battery life, price, and features. But how does it stack up to the Apple MacBook Pro, our current Editors' Choice for desktop replacement laptops? It...

Dell XPS 15 ( Fall 2013)

That said, the newly revamped XPS 15, from Dell's high-end product line, is a spectacular laptop, matching the premium features of Apple's also-excellent 15-inch MacBook Pro almost blow for blow.

The Dell XPS 15 has a better-than-HD display, decent casual-gaming chops, and a slim, lightweight 15-inch body.

Painfully expensive for a boring design and midlevel graphics, and going SSD-only drives the price up even more. Battery life falls short for an ultrabook-style system.

The Dell XPS 15 takes on Apple's MacBook Pro with Retina Display in almost every category, even beating it in a few. But for such a hefty investment, a design overhaul is in order.

Dell XPS 15 (Sandy Bridge)

With an endless array of features and a stunning screen, the Dell XPS 15 (Sandy Bridge) is a jam-packed desktop replacement laptop.

Sandy Bridge Quad-core processor. 1080p resolution. Skype-certified HD webcam. Nvidia GeForce GT 540M is a nice boost in graphics power. Great keyboard. Backlit option. Soft mouse buttons. HDMI and Displayport. Long list of processor options. Huge...

Thick and clunky. A fully loaded configuration can be pricey.

Dell XPS 15

Calling the Dell XPS 15 the preeminent desktop replacement laptop is a no-brainer, since there's nothing else like it right now.

1080p resolution. First HD webcam on a laptop. Nvidia GeForce GT 420M graphics chip is also a first. Has Optimus technology. Excellent keyboard. Backlit option. Soft mouse buttons. HDMI and DisplayPort. Long list of processor options. Reasonably priced.

Thick and heavy. The 6-cell battery alone won't cut it.

Dell XPS 15 Notebook Review

Even more pixels! As the successor to Dell's XPS 15 (Late 2013) with its QHD+ display, the American company now presents the overhauled XPS 15 in a new configuration with a 4K UHD display and a more powerful processor. The almost perfect display image...

High brightness, Good color representation out of the factory, Display calibrates very well, High resolution, High-quality case

Possible scaling problems, Heats up under load, Reflective display, Higher energy consumption compared to predecessor

The Dell XPS 15 is and remains a showpiece. When it comes to the notebook's case and input devices, Dell sets the bar high, but the main focus of attention here is the new 4K display. The resolution isn't the display's only impressive quality - its...
