A day on the Gateway 14

The Gateway 14, available exclusively at Walmart, is one of the cheapest Windows laptops you can buy. We used it for a day of work, and while it's not perfect, it offers great value — and a bold, blue chassis.

Great price for the specs ; Speedy performance with no noise ; Excellent port selection ; Easy to upgrade storage ; It’s blue!

Bad touchpad ; Not great microphones ; Tinny audio ; Keyboard isn’t backlit

Given the fact that my two biggest issues, the touchpad and the microphones, can both be solved by external peripherals, I really did not have too much to complain about here. If you don’t already own a mouse or microphone and will need to buy them,...

Gateway M460 review

Gateway M460 Editors' note: In early September 2005, Gateway changed the names of many of its laptops. Read our explanation to learn how to make sense of the new names and where to find CNET's reviews of Gateway laptops. (10/6/05)

Good performance; long battery life; up to five-year optional warranty.

Lax security; flimsy keyboard.

It may not have the latest components or top security, but the Gateway M460S offers top performance, long battery life, and a choice of displays to satisfy corporate users of all stripes.

Gateway NX550XL Laptop

The Gateway M460X's wide-screen resolution of 1200 by 800 pixels may not be able to match the detail that higher-resolution 15.4-inch wide screens can produce, so you won't squeeze quite as many spreadsheet columns onto the M460X's screen at once or...

Offers loads of USB ports

Pointing stick difficult to use

Gateway has pared its once lushly detailed and illustrated printed users' manual down to a small, plain booklet, with networking tips relegated to a separate Acrobat manual on the hard drive. The documentation may not be as cohesive as before, but it...

Pointing stick difficult to use

Slim laptop has 4 USB ports--more than most laptops have. It has a problematic pointing stick device, however.

Gateway M460X

Though it's well designed, the M460X has a disappointing keyboard.

The M460X is light and snazzy looking for a 15.4-inch wide screen, but don't consider it if you're set on using a pointing stick.

Gateway M460

The Gateway M460 has all the right components and processing power to kick your workday into high gear.

Fast processor. Vast selection of connectivity ports.

Below-average screen. Plastic material is not scratchproof.

The Gateway M460 series is designed to be a versatile and surprisingly mobile desktop replacement notebook, based on the wonderful Intel Centrino package. Configuration options allow you to balance price, performance, and mobility. At the low end, the...
