Gateway M680XL

This wide-screen notebook is lightweight for its size and has great battery life, but few entertainment options.

Handsome black and silver case

Lacks quick-launch buttons

Not all big-screen laptops are party portables, and that includes Gateway's $2565 M680XL. It lacks entertainment chops, but it's a fast, totable 17-inch-screen desktop replacement with good battery life.

Big business machine

With the latest and fastest components as well as one of the best displays on the market, the Gateway M680 is a great laptop for both work and play, but it falls short of the mark with a high price tag and no TV tuner for watching CNN at the office.

Excellent performance; top-speed components; sharp screen and graphics.

Expensive; no multimedia extras, such as a TV tuner and digital video recorder; lacks security measures often found in corporate laptops.

With high-end performance and graphics, the Gateway M680XL is a power user's dream come true, but it lacks both the security that businesses demand and the multimedia goodies home users want.

Gateway M680XL

Gateway makes several significant improvements with the M680XL. It's thinner and lighter than most systems with a 17-inch widescreen, and it has the best battery life in its class.

Great battery life. Thinner and lighter than the previous generation. Good performance.

No internal TV tuner. Will need a hard drive upgrade.

Gateway M680 Review (pics, specs)

I was so pleased with the first Gateway notebook I reviewed (the Gateway M460) that I was delighted to get the opportunity to review Gateways' top of the line multimedia powerhouse, the M680. The Gateway M680 is a 17" widescreen notebook that is best...

Gateway M680XL Review

Lighter weight and longer battery life than most 17-inch-screen super-jumbo laptops; above-average CPU and graphics performance

Keyboard layout takes a little practice; no Bluetooth; seems a natural for Media Center configuration, but Gateway doesn't offer one

One of our game-simulation benchmarks -- AquaMark3 -- crashed, but every other program we tried ran like clockwork, and fast clockwork at that. Helped by 1GB of DDR-2/400 memory (add $300 for 2GB) and a 60GB, 7,200-rpm Hitachi hard disk, the Gateway...
