HP's 4K Omen 17 has good gaming graphics at a great price

Nvidia GeForce 1070 graphics in a 17-inch laptop for $1,700. Those numbers add up well.

The HP Omen 17 comes in a wide range of configurations, most of which offer good graphical bang for your buck.

The 4K variant has poor battery life, no option for a Nvidia GeForce 1080 GPU.

It's not the most powerful gaming laptop out there, nor the slimmest one, but it's among the best combinations of price, screen size and performance.

HP Omen 17 (2017) review: You get a lot of gaming laptop for the money

An updated design fixes some flaws in last year's Omen gaming laptop, but the real selling point is still its great value.

Great specs for the price ; Nice build quality

Mediocre touchpad ; Sound quality not up to par with other big gaming laptops

The 2017 version of the HP Omen 17-inch gaming laptop is a small but welcome update from . It still has some room to grow, with “just okay” audio and a “just okay” touchpad, along with a rather pedestrian aesthetic. But at least it’s not nearly as...

HP Omen 17 (2017)

The new HP Omen 17 bears a new exterior design and fast gaming performance, but is largely same as last year's on the inside and carries a higher price tag.

Fast gaming performance. 4K display good for media viewing. Plenty of ports.

Expensive for components and build. GTX 1070 isn't powerful enough for gaming on the 4K screen.

Bottom Line: The new HP Omen 17 is still good for gaming, but the high price tag and minimal improvements over its predecessor make it a questionable buy.

HP Omen (17-inch) review: It's all about what's on the inside

What it lacks in flashy design or extras, this big-screen gamer makes up for in performance.

The 17-inch HP Omen is available in several configurations depending on your needs and budget. Reasonably priced even with its top-end, VR-ready version. Low-key design and good battery life compared to other gaming systems. Nice ultra HD-resolution...

Lacks the flashy design or macro/shortcut keys found on other gaming laptops. Can get hot and loud under load. No USB-C ports. No touchscreen.

The 17-inch HP Omen might not look aggressive, but you'll have no problems taking down the competition with this fully loaded gaming laptop.

HP Omen 17

The HP Omen 17 brings Nvidia's Pascal graphics, a 4K display, plenty of storage, and excellent performance to the midrange price tier, making it a good gaming laptop that is also a good value.

Attractive pricing. 4K display. Strong gaming performance. High storage capacity. Appealing, relatively slim design.

Plastic body. So-so touchpad.

Conclusion For a very reasonable price given the 4K display and the GTX 1070, the HP Omen 17 is an attractive proposition. Its performance is on par with or better than you'll see from midrange gaming laptops that cost more, many of which can't match...

The HP Omen offers stunning good looks, powerful specs and a lovely 4K monitor that's ideal for gaming.

HP Omen 17 (7700HQ, GTX 1050 Ti, FHD) Laptop Review

Wasted opportunities. This year's Omen 17 update brings us a Pascal GPU, 16 GB of RAM, and a powerful Kaby Lake CPU. Our review is going to reveal whether or not we can recommend the Omen 17 despite some drawbacks.

decent SSD + 1 TB hard drive ; user-replaceable battery ; nice design ; fast CPU & GPU ; 16 GB of RAM ; long battery life on low and medium load ; good price

noise ; temperature ; very noticeable screen bleeding ; PWM flickering ; dpc latencies ; poor touchpad ; complicated maintenance

The Omen 17-w206ng left us slightly flabbergasted and disappointed. Our gut feeling tells us that this could have been a very powerful notebook if only HP hadn’t screwed up.Its design is overall pleasing, and its components are well-balanced and...

HP Omen 17 (GTX 1060) Notebook Review

Well-balanced. At a purchase price of almost 1300 Euros (~$1390), the Omen 17 w100ng is presently the cheapest device within its lineup. This slightly lower-performance model also renders games smoothly on its matte Full HD panel. The Omen offers a...

good price-performance ratio ; M.2 socket supports NVMe ; G-Sync support ; matte IPS panel ; SSD+HDD

touchpad makes inferior impression ; no USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-C

The entry-level model of the Omen lineup does not feature a Core i7 CPU but "only" offers a Core i5-6300HQ processor. Consequently, the buyer "only" has to cough up 1300 Euros (~$1390). However, the installed processor has more than enough computing...

HP Omen 17 (i7-6700HQ, GTX 1070) Notebook Review

Omen meets Pascal. After other manufacturers of high-end laptops already equipped their systems with the latest Nvidia GPU generation, HP now follows with the Omen series and launches a gaming machine for an appealing price. But is the...

IPS display (wide viewing angles and high contrast) ; no backlight bleeding, no PWM ; good price-performance ratio ; G-Sync support ; fast NVMe-SSD ; stylish keyboard illumination ; high gaming performance ; 8 GB VRAM ; fast processor ; thin, nice...

no USB 3.1 Gen. 2 ; touchpad leaves a cheap impression ; complicated maintenance ; no optical drive ; integrated battery

Many people think about business or office notebooks when they hear HP, but the Omen name represents the gaming series from HP. Our test model, the Omen 17-w110ng, can meet the expectations for a gaming notebook. Users get a powerful CPU/GPU...
