ASUS K40IN Review

ASUS' K-series notebooks promise a blend of value and performance. The K40IN is a 14-inch notebook with Nvidia graphics and an $800 price tag. How did it hold up in our testing? Read on to find out how this affordable laptop performs.

Reasonable build quality ; Great screen and keyboard ; Good battery life & performance

No HDMI port or ExpressCard ; Weak graphics ; Horrible speakers

Not bad for the money

I ordered five of these laptops for our company and put XP Pro on them. They're decent laptops, not crazy fast, but I don't think they're bad for the price. If you want to use these for anything besides basic business/Internet use, look elsewhere.

Came with a Core 2 Duo T5870 @ 2.00GHz not the T4300 advertised ; Build quality ; 4+ hour battery life ; Good warranty ; Good price

Touchpad is too grippy when sliding your finger, buttons are too hard to push ; The LCD is mediocre at best, poor viewing angles ; 5400 rpm hard drive ; Too much bloatware ; Fingerprints, fingerprints, fingerprints

Warning

I purchase Asus for all of my company's laptop needs. We have traditionally used laptops over the $1k range...after this purchase I will most definitely be returning to only purchasing in that range... Do not waste your money on this one.

Usual high quality Asus build w/ good materials for the price. This is the only reason this thing even gets two eggs ; Comes with XP Pro downgrade...sadly I had to use it

Buyer beware...if you plan on using XP Mode in Windows 7 this laptop is NOT for you. The processor in this lappy does not support virtualization...a prereq to XP Mode ; No dedicated Gfx = lag everywhere ; NO XP MODE

excellent choice for the price

I am a computer tech, thats my full time job. i have had very good luck with asus products and frequently buy into them... of course always from newegg. this laptop was my choice because i didnt want to spend a whole lot on it, but it is very quick and...

Very impressive as far as speed goes ; Im not a huge fan of bundled software but the power4gear is very neat to quickly change to a battery saving mode ; the battery can easily last 3 hours of use ; the screen size makes it very portable ; core 2 duo...

bundled software.... nothing a fresh install wont fix ; the sound is a tad quiet but thats true with most laptops ; webcam is so-so... also true with most laptops

Should be better

The XP downgrade process is unnecessarily long- It seems to mimic what they would do at the factory for all models, rather than creating a simple drive image specific to this one. As such, it took about 75 minutes instead of 10, but worked fine.

ASUS is known for their high-quality build standards. I have no doubt that this is mostly made from the finest components available. It also comes with an XP Pro downgrade CD

The screen is the worst I've seen on a notebook in a long time- the colors look washed out, and I could not find any settings to change that ; XP Pro downgrade still installs a bit of crapware (junk programs, like an antivirus trial)
