Lenovo G50-80 Notebook Review

No frills. Visually, the G50 doesn't stray from the typical look we've come to expect from Lenovo. The internal components are solid and while the notebook isn't what we'd call a highlight, it's a very decent package overall.

system performance ; temperature control ; fan noise

lower performance on battery ; throttling ; display brightness ; build quality

New, but an old acquaintance: Lenovo's G50-80 features a previous-generation chassis. Aside from a few minor flaws surrounding the build quality, the overall impression is a good one. The TN panel isn't exactly a standout feature, though: the...

Keep Shopping

When I bought this laptop It was just supposed to be a portable internet browser, for streaming media, and to run basic productivity applications. I didn't expect it to be a powerhouse, by any means. But this computer was so frustratingly slow I had to...

- Removable Battery. I know most laptop batteries are removable, but some aren't. This one is. - User upgradable. Some manufacturers don't want the user to modify the Hard Drive or RAM. This laptop was designed with these parts to be user upgradable &...

- Very Slow. The stock RAM and Hard Drive are not enough to run Window very well. This may not be the case for all, but mine came with two RAM sticks installed (4GB + 2GB) I replaced the 2GB with an 8GB module, to end up with 12GB RAM. The system was...

Terrible

-Don't buy

-Big screen -Free windows 10 update

-Awful battery life. After about a month of use the computer would die in about an hour. -Not durable at all. Had to replace the hard drive twice because it got physically damaged through the computer somehow. Screen got internally cracked as well....

Great little machine!

I came to this laptop from a great old Macbook that was built like a tank. I was a little afraid that this notebook would pale in comparison, and the fact is that it isn't as sturdy as my old Macbook. However, it is a quality notebook at a great price,...

I use my laptop mostly for development, and it does very well to that end. Runs very quickly on Ubuntu 15.10 and is plenty capable under Win 8.1 as well.

The keyboard can feel a little cramped at times, I guess, but it's not a big enough deal for me to dock an egg. The hard drive isn't very fast, but that's only an issue when you run into swapping (which, thanks to all the memory in this thing, rarely...

Good buy but fragile

The biggest issue is how fragile it is. My wife dropped it from about 2 feet off the ground on to carpet and the casing broke and it became a desktop. We still use this computer today but it is now a desktop with external, keyboard, mouse, monitor and...

I did not buy this system from newegg but the exact same system from Microsoft's store. I got this system as a general purpose system for my wife. The system upgraded to Windows 10 without any issue. Once booted the system ran pretty well. It would...

The glide pad buttons were hard to push down. If you hook up an external mouse this would not be an issue. The Wifi had issues out of the box but after upgrading the driver it seamed to do OK. The sound quality is what you would expect from a cheap...

Lenovo knows exactly what they are doing.

On a fresh 7 install none of the networking or USB ports worked so make sure you have drivers on a DVD. I have suggested this laptop to several people and prefer it to my work HP that cost 2x as much.

I have had this laptop for about a year now and continue to be surprised by the quality in Lenovo. I was happy before but I just put a SSD in it and the process was smoother than expected. The laptop has a tiny dedicated BIOS boot button instead of...

The DVD drive made a lot of noise but I specifically bought a laptop with a disc drive to make sure installing a different OS would be easy. It doesn't have a dedicated graphics card which is why it doesn't cost $200 more. I've played WoW, Diablo 3,...

Pros and cons

I've mentioned this before in other reviews but: I tend to prefer solutions that are cheap. For me, buying a machine + maxing out its upgrades for < $550 was important, so for people like me (for whom the performance + price point outweigh the...

The price, for one. I got this for $389 from Newegg and for the price, it's pretty solid. Very upgradable and requires very little work to do so. I was able to put 16gigs DDR3 + a Samsung SSD in this thing out of the box and it took about two minutes....

There are tons of cons about this machine that started rearing their heads once it was no longer returnable. I typically ignore "usual cons" (screen resolution, slow HDD...) on machines that are this cheap but these are "beyond low-quality". The...

School Laptop

Make sure to get rid of the typical Lenovo adware that comes stock. Should speed it up even more.

This laptop is definitely good enough for a student who needs something to connect to the Internet and use for word or photoshop. Fast boot time and a good amount of hard drive space.

Have had some problems after upgrading to Windows 10. The screen had randomly gone black a few times and have had to take out battery(absolutely last thing you want to do) to reset it. Not sure about a fix, but it hasn't done it in about a month.
