Lenovo Y40 review: An understated 14-inch gaming laptop for less than $1000

This stylish machine games up to 1080p and is an all-around nicely realized laptop.

Games well at 1920x1080 (better at 1024x768) ; Solid price-to-performance ratio ; Fantastic keyboard

Too many screws holding its bottom panel ; Highly reflective bezel bordering its screen

Lenovo has built a very competent 14-inch gaming laptop and priced it right.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y40 delivers great performance, especially at its price.

Great price/performance ; Solid quality ; Good keyboard ; Good speakers ; Runs cool and quiet

Lenovo Y40 review

This sleek, budget gaming laptop is all looks

Rich sound delivery ; Solid build quality ; Punchy, tactile keyboard

Poor gaming performance ; Bloatware ; Inconsistent trackpad

Lenovo's 14-inch gaming machine looks the part, but can't prove its worth in the gaming arena

Consumer review (newegg.com)

8 months later and it's dead.

I haven't owned it long but as of now I'm pretty happy for the price. I will update my review down the line assuming that is something they allow. I turned my computer on to play some video games and it powered off and is a paper weight now.

It looks nice Fairly light Fast enough to do what I need to do Plenty of hard-drive space

Speakers are a bit lacking

Great Value

I wish it had an all metal case - but hey for this money and quality of hardware I'm already happy.

For the price I got what appears to be a brand new laptop. Expert level refurbish skill if this was not simply an open box return. I have read some horror stories from refurbished reviews so I consider this to be a very pleasing experience. As far as...

It doesn't have a brand new laptop warranty despite its new laptop looks.

Lenovo Laptop Y40 14” Full HD Gaming Notebook with Intel Core i7 4510U 2.00Ghz (3.10Ghz), 8GB Memory, 1TB HDD + 8GB SSD, Radeon R9 M275 2GB, Windows 8

I am happy with this computer although if I bought again I might choose a different model with a brighter display. This is packed with features and enough horsepower to last me for a fair few years (I bought in June 2015) I am a technician and I use it...

Great price and performance Great for powerful desktop use Nice built in video card functions I like the case look and feel I upgraded to windows 10 with no problems Great price for so much power in a small package This was refurbished but I have had...

Display is not bright No backlit keys It's OK but not the best for gaming use because of the display only, especially in bright light due to the dim display. Hook up an external monitor when at home and it is fine. I really wanted a shell case for this...

Consumer review (newegg.com)

Worked fine at first.

you can use it to get on the internet and play browser games

Worked fine up until a few weeks ago, now the fan seems to be constantly running so I just ordered a cooling pad. and the batter is giving me problems where it shuts off unexpectedly. Was very disappointed in this.

Consumer review (newegg.com)

Was hoping for more for money spent

Fairly quick, Looks great, speakers are loud and clear.

No back lit keyboard, pics are very deceiving and I am extremely disappointed. I would have thought if i spent this much on a laptop the keyboard would at least light up. Charger included looks used- Hope its not. Says 1TB HD and 8GB SSD but stats say...

Consumer review (newegg.com)

It's Okay... Probably better than your average laptop.

Dedicated graphics makes it zippier than your average laptop

Its a low end gaming laptop. The price I paid (509.99) is actually a bit more than I would actually pay had I known how exactly low-end it was. It's better than the laptop you might buy from Best Buy, but just barely ; Use the money and buy a good DIY...
