Microsoft Surface Book 3 (13-inch) review: A portable powerhouse

The Surface Book 3 doubles down on Microsoft's performance objectives for the line, offering a fast CPU and discrete GPU that make it a strong 13-inch offering.

Strong performance ; Good battery life ; Excellent input options ; Sharp, high-contrast display

Bulky chassis ; Expensive

Microsoft’s 13.5-inch Surface Book 3 puts modern guts in a dated design

A premium dead end.

Great keyboard, trackpad, and display ; Detachable screen with 3:2 aspect ratio ; All-day battery life

Wobbly display ; No Thunderbolt 3 support ; Design is getting dated

Microsoft’s 13.5-inch Surface Book 3 looks and feels identical to the 13.5-inch Surface Book 2 in all but a few small ways. That doesn’t mean it’s not a great computer; the Book 2 is a great computer, and Microsoft hasn’t fixed what wasn’t broken.

Microsoft Surface Book 3 review: The 'ultimate laptop' needs new ideas

Microsoft has upgraded its Surface Book 3 with new CPU and GPU options. But the PC industry is racing ahead of this once-innovative design.

Solid performance ; Surprisingly quiet most of the time ; Very good battery life ; Detachable tablet is still unique in the industry

Extremely pricey ; A history of hardware bugs

Although you probably don’t want to buy a $2,000 PC for the keyboard alone, I’m convinced that the Surface Book lineup offers the best of any laptop today. (Lenovo’s ThinkPad keyboards, which also have a deserved reputation for quality, are a close...

Microsoft Surface Book 3 (13.5) review – a rarely seen abomination that deserves your attention

Ever since the first Surface Book was released, Microsoft somewhat reinvented the term “laptop convertible”. Instead of offering a 360-degree hinge, which allows you to use the entirety…

The most versatile device out there;Detachable display (that houses the CPU);Great keyboard and a decently fast dedicated GPU;Two M.2 slots; The display doesn’t flicker at any brightness level (LM156LF-2F01);Has a high resolution, good contrast ratio...

Lacks Thunderbolt and other usable I/O;Practically nonupgradable

Microsoft Surface Book 3 (13.5-inch) review: Still the 2-in-1 champion?

What's new in the third-gen Surface Book? Most is to be found under the, ahem, surface. Here's what to expect of Microsoft's top-end 2-in-1 laptop.

Sumptuous screen resolution ; Muscle-wire release system to separate base and screen ; Distinctive & solid design ; Full-size ports & USB-C

Big bezel starting to look dated ; Big & heavy design ; Pricier than ever ; Screen is reflective & lacks ultra-wide colour gamut ; No Thunderbolt 3 speed

If you're in the market for an all-powerful pro-spec 2-in-1 then the Surface Book 3 is hard to beat. But we know Microsoft has the potential to turn things up to 11 for a fourth-gen model - so if you're not in a rush you might want to wait for the...

The Surface Book 3 is Microsoft's most powerful laptop ever, but the lack of substantial upgrades means it's been surpassed by the competition
