A 14-inch screen and built-in DVD burner make the Samsung Series 5 Ultra (NP530U4B-A01US) stand out from the ultrabook crowd.

Optical drive and 14-inch screen top generic ultrabooks. Hybrid hard drive system almost as fast as SSDs, with more space. WiDi.

No big advantage in weight or battery life over ultraportables and 14-inch slimlines.

Samsung 530U4BI review: Samsung 530U4BI

 

The Samsung Series 5 is a fairly slim midsize laptop with decent battery life and plenty of features, including dual USB 3.0 ports.

Samsung calls this an ultrabook, but with a DVD drive, a 500GB platter hard drive, and a weight of nearly 4 pounds, it really doesn't fit the ultrabook mold.

If you ignore the ultrabook branding and instead think of this as a somewhat slim midsize, mainstream laptop, the 14-inch Samsung Series 5 is a fine example of the form.

A notebook that tries to masquerade as an Ultrabook.

SSD makes for snappy boot times, good screen, range of connectivity options

Weighs more than a real Ultrabook, plastic is alarmingly easy to snap in places, average battery life and performance

The spacious trackpad at the bottom is great for navigating around Windows, and also supports multi-gestures like two finger scrolling and pinch-to-zoom. It’s not clickable though, so you’ll have to tap on the trackpad or use the buttons at the bottom....
