Satellite U405

Ultraportable laptops priced under a grand are still relatively rare. The same can be said for slim, sexy notebooks that weigh close to 4 pounds. That's changing, though, and Toshiba's $949 Satellite U405-S2854 satisfies in all the important areas: It...

Great value Huge hard drive

High-gloss finish might put off some Lacking wired Internet connectivity

The biggest concessions you might miss: gigabit ethernet and a modem port, two wired-communications options that most laptops still offer. The U405-S2854 is fully equipped for wireless communications, though, with both Bluetooth and 802.11g Wi-Fi antennas

Toshiba Toshiba Satellite U405 Laptop Review

Great value ; Huge hard drive

High-gloss finish might put off some ; Lacking wired Internet connectivity

Think of the U405 as a really inexpensive ultraportable or an incredibly svelte all-purpose machine. It's both.

Toshiba Satellite U405-S2830

The Toshiba Satellite U405-S2830 offers a fresh new look in the Satellite line at a price that should appeal to most consumers.

Fusion design works well with the LED lights. Intel's latest technology. Internal optical drive with LabelFlash. 3GB RAM. Recharging USB ports. Affordable.

No HDMI. Battery life could be better.

Toshiba Satellite U405-S2830 review: Toshiba Satellite U405-S2830

Toshiba Satellite U405-S2830

Stylish new design; charges USB devices, even when off.

Glossy finish attracts fingerprints; way too much bloatware; Sleep-and-Charge feature is turned off by default.

Toshiba's thin-and-light Satellite U405 is a sleek alternative to the 13-inch MacBook, but is weighed down by excessive out-of-the-box bloatware.

Toshiba Satellite U405 Review

The Toshiba Satellite U400/U405 series is a new 13.3" widescreen notebook that weighs in at just 4.85 pounds and packs solid Intel Core 2 Duo Penryn performance and a big hard drive with plenty of storage space. Add to that a stylish chassis covered in...

Reasonably thin and light weight ; Great screen ; Wonderful keyboard ; Fantastic touchpad and touchpad buttons ; Great media buttons and white LED indicators ; Good selection of ports ; Convenient USB "Sleep and Charge" ports ; Excellent performance ;...

No S-video or HDMI port (in this configuration) ; No dedicated graphics option (at the time of this writing) ; Mirror finish won't appeal to everyone ; I don't get to keep it

If you are an average consumer looking for a well-rounded 13-inch notebook that can handle all of your needs without breaking the bank then the Toshiba Satellite U405 belongs at the top of your list

Toshiba Satellite U405 Review

The Toshiba Satellite U400 series offer small, lightweight and fully functional notebooks. They are not to be confused with netbooks, whose duties include the most basic of tasks such as working with office documents, messaging and browsing the net.

Thin and light ; Great screen ; Nice keyboard and touchpad ; Wide cross-section of ports ; Built-in FM Radio ; Excellent performance ; Long battery life ; Great bang-for-buck value

Integrated graphics ; No S-Video or HDMI ports

A very nice machine overall. I think that anyone purchasing this machine for office work, web browsing, multimedia fun and/or light gaming would be really satisfied with it. The Toshiba Satellite U405 is a great value and I fully recommend it.

Toshiba Satellite U405

Among the forest of Toshiba laptop models, the Toshiba Satellite U405 series is among their most lightweight and affordable class of notebooks. There are two flavors of the Satellite U405 series: the U405 that comes with Intel processors and the U405D...

The redesign gives the notebook a modern update. The shiny surface and the fusion cover look sleek. Bright display with good viewing angle. The notebook has plenty of horsepower, memory and a fast hard drive. Plenty of ports should handle most common...

The notebook surface shows fingerprints easily. With integrated graphics, some games might not play. Too much bloatware. No HDMI or FireWire for multimedia mavens.

The Toshiba U405 has the right balance between size and power, and has plenty of ports for working with various accessories. For the price, the Toshiba offers very good specs and the hardware benchmarks very well. If you're a student who is looking for...

Toshiba Satellite U405 series laptop computer Review and Prices

Toshiba's Satellite U405 laptop computers aren't quite thin-and-light ultra-portables, but these notebooks are definitely easier to carry around than many of their mainstream brethren.

Very portable, good core power
