Toshiba Satellite U925t review: with its first Windows 8 convertible, Toshiba bets big on the slider

You can't see our New York City office right now, but it's something of a laptop menagerie. We just finished reviewing a laptop whose screen flips inside its hinge, and now we're testing an Ultrabook with a touchscreen, along with a notebook whose...

IPS display offers good viewing angles ; Can be used in tablet mode

Slider design means limited keyboard space ; Loud fan noise ; Short battery life ; Build quality isn't great

The U925t's slider form factor makes for a compromised typing experience. Meanwhile, other Win 8 convertibles offer better screens, battery life and build quality for a similar price.

Toshiba Satellite U925T-S2120

Although it has all the ingredients for a good ultrabook or tablet, the Toshiba Satellite U925T-S2120 misses the mark by trying to be both.

Thin and portable. Agile Intel Core i5-3337U processor. Built-in IPS panel. Solid battery life. Adjustable display angle.

128 GB drive. Cramped keyboard and touchpad. Tablet feels unwieldy. Exposed hinge on the system's rear is an eyesore.

Review: Toshiba Satellite U925t-S2300

For its stab at a Windows 8 hybrid, Toshiba is siding with sliding. But it falls short on value, battery life and general usability.

Rubberized backing makes for better grip and generally keeps things cool. Keyboard backlighting looks good. Sturdy, with solid slider action.

Low-resolution screen is iffy on tap recognition. Moderately loud, droning fan when under load. Battery life just 3.5 hours. Not a great value.

Toshiba Satellite U925t review

As Windows 8 starts to flood the market, certain types of computers are going to become a lot more common. There will be a lot of convertible tablet / dock combinations, plenty of ultrabooks with...

Big, responsive display ; Slider makes it usable as a tablet ; Solid complement of ports

Unattractive design ; Gets hot and loud while gaming ; Small, finicky trackpad ; Lots of bloatware

The sliding trick is nice, but the U925 doesn't have much else going for it

Toshiba Satellite U925t review

At first glance, slider-style Windows 8 convertibles will remind you of smartphones with slide-out keyboards, a style rarely seen anymore. The design hypothetically combines the best aspects of a slate and a physical keyboard, solving the biggest...

A solidly built slider-style Windows 8 convertible, the Toshiba Satellite U925t includes features, such as a touch pad, that others leave out.

The design leaves the screen exposed at all times, so you'll need a case or sleeve. The screen resolution is low for a $1,149 laptop.

The mechanical elements of the Toshiba Satellite U925t convertible laptop are complex, but well-made. It won't be your main machine, but it's one of the more usable Windows 8 launch experiments.

A slider laptop hybrid, the Toshiba Satellite U925t has our interest, as long as it comes in at the right price.

"Poor sliding screen design"

After 18 months of light usage the cable for the screen started smoking. This was not due to abuse but a poor design by Toshiba. It's out of warranty so hopefully I can convert it to a work station. There are more reviews on Amazon about the screen...

Killer convertible ultra-book/tablet on Windows 8!

Not yet available so I can't make any decision.

Looks sexy, slim! Full touch screen transformer style 2 in 1 - ultra-book and laptop. I've to make tough decision among - Satellite U925t, MS Surface Pro, Apple Air 13", and MacBook Pro Retina(upcoming cheaper 13"?? or expensive 15").

Price and details hardware specifications are unknown. High price or low hardware configurations might turn me off.
