Toshiba Tecra M1

Stylish notebook has phenomenal battery life and plenty of upgrade options, but its power-saving settings are not helpful.

If you need your next notebook to work all day away from an outlet, look to the Tecra M1 or its near-twin S1.

Toshiba Tecra M1 review: Toshiba Tecra M1

Toshiba Tecra M1

Five-hour battery life; DVD burner; plenty of ports, including FireWire; attractive design; Centrino architecture.

Big and heavy; performance trails that of other Pentium M notebooks; expensive.

The Tecra M1 features top-flight components, a DVD burner, and a five-hour battery, but it doesn't measure up in performance, portability, or price.

The Toshiba Tecra M1's advantage over the others here is its multimedia capabilities. By sticking with a 12.5-mm-high removable bay, the Tecra can fit a rewritable DVD-RAM drive.
