Nikon AF-S Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR

The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR lens offers the convenience of a long range and doesn't show a lot of distortion, but images lose some crispness when zoomed all the way in.

Strong sharpness through most of range. Long telephoto reach. Optical stabilization. Minimal distortion. Relatively lightweight. Includes tripod collar and hood.

Sharpness dips at 400mm and toward edges of frame. Pricey.

Conclusions The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR is a solid choice for photographers who want more zoom reach than is provided by a 70-200mm, but don't want to sacrifice a lot of wide-angle coverage. It's best used in brighter light, making...

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Review

For a 5x zoom, the AF-S Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR is an excellent performer. Centre sharpness is very good to excellent at all apertures throughout the zoom range, with the borders also being impressively sharp at most zoom settings. Chromatic...

Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S Nikkor Review

Optically this lens is excellent, producing very sharp photos on both full-frame and sub-frame cameras even at wide-open apertures throughout the zoom range. Other image quality factors like chromatic aberration, distortion and vignetting were all well...

Lens Review: Nikon AF-S Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR

A well-regarded telephoto zoom lens gets a much-needed update, making it sharper and more stable.

Excellent upgraded image stabilization; exceptional optical performance through much of its zoom range; smooth, accurate focusing; solid, weather-sealed build

Steep launch price tag

Nikon 80-200mm f/4 AI-S Review Round-Up

This is the best manual focus telephoto zoom for Nikon. Of course if you can find one of the huge (95 mm filter) manual focus 80 - 200mm f/2.8s don't let me stop you, but for my bag I'd get one of these if I wanted a manual focus tele zoom. … READ FULL...

Nikon 80-400 AF Zoom Lens

First, the good news: An 80 to 400 zoom is a wonderful idea. The fact that it is well balanced, lightweight, and sharp adds to the fun. Put it on the digital D1 and we are talking about a 120mm to 600mm zoom-now that's impressive!

Nikon Nikkor AF-S 80-400 mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR

In 2000 Nikon launched the Nikkor AF 80–400mm f/4.5–5.6D VR, the first lens of that producer which was equipped with an image stabilization system called Vibration Reduction (VR). Although they boasted about 3 EV stops efficiency, in reality it was...

good quality casing ; very good image quality in the frame centre, no matter what focal length you employ ; good image quality on the edge of the APS-C sensor ; slight chromatic aberration ; lack of spherical aberration problems ; imperceptible...

image quality on the edge of full frame should have been better ; too many flares and too low contrast during the work against bright light
