Roku XDS review

It's an interesting time for Roku -- the upstart device company has owned the cheap'n'easy Netflix streaming market since the beginning, and its

Lots of content options ; 1080p support ; Promised local media playback

Not much 1080p content ; Added cost over Roku HD / XD yields few extras ; No DLNA support yet

Roku XDS

Roku's latest TV companion box, the XDS takes on the new Apple TV, but can it compete?

Simple set-up. Intuitive user interface. Netflix, Amazon, Hulu Plus, and other movie services brought straight to your TV. Multiple outputs, including HDMI, to fit your home-theater set up.

Video quality is often subpar. Must pay for each app through the specific vendor—no way to register a single payment account with Roku. Free apps aren't great and the overall selection is limited.

Inexpensive, easy to use, wide library of content providers, great picture quality

Need to sign up separately with most content providers, no easy way to stream media from a computer, few providers stream in 1080p quality

Roku XDS Review

The Roku XDS streaming media box faces some stiff competition from Apple TV, Google TV and Boxee. Can it survive in a crowded market?

Free music is available through Pandora, MOG, Roxwel, Tune in Radio, Radio Paradise, and many others. Pandora has become my favorite app on my Samsung LCD TV and on my iPod Touch, and it worked just as well through the XDS. The Roku XDS may not have...

Review: Roku XDS

While Apple, Google, Boxee, and others offer higher-priced set-top devices that do more, the Roku is succeeding on price and ease. The latest iteration of the little set-top box that could further establishes Roku as the one to beat.

Inexpensive; compact; streams movies and TV shows from Netflix and other services; works with 802.11b/g/n routers and offers extended-range wireless N; includes both HDMI and component connections; USB connection for external drives

Can't access content stored on networked computers

Roku is the little engine that could. While bigger names are trying to dominate the nascent but quickly growing set-top box market, bridging the gap between Internet and living room television, Roku has done so in a walk. It makes simple, inexpensive...
