Asus MG278Q 27-inch QHD FreeSync Gaming Monitor Review

Recently we checked out Asus' MG279Q, a stunning-looking 27-inch IPS gaming monitor with FreeSync, 144Hz and a premium price. Today we're reviewing a cheaper alternative -- the TN-based MG278Q.

144Hz refresh rate, FreeSync available up to 144Hz, color-accurate, bright, sharp image, QHD resolution, OSD joystick controller, solid build quality

TN panel

We don't hate TN monitors by any means and the latest panels look pretty good, but we still prefer IPS. In this case, the MG278Q matches its more-expensive stablemate in every area except for contrast and exceeds it in usable FreeSync range. Depending...

ASUS MG278Q Review

If you're willing to shell out a premium price for a high-performance gaming monitor, Asus' $549 MG278Q is an excellent choice. Its stunning 27-inch, 2560 x 1440 display is a bit more futureproof than your average 1080p monitor, and its super-intuitive...

Flexible design ; Vibrant and responsive ; Intuitive Interface ; Supports AMD FreeSync

Expensive ; A few lackluster presets

Asus MG278Q gaming monitor features a stunning 27-inch quad HD display, AMD FreeSync support and a host of extras that help you in the heat of battle.

Great Monitor!

I'd recommend this monitor cause the price was fair on sale ($550CAD). These high quality monitors need to start coming down on prices and this was the first time i felt it was okay to make the jump. Hope it goes down even further to pick up a second :)

-1440p (came from 23" 1680x1050p and wow the difference is massive) -144hz (35-144hz for Freesync!) -Premium 8bit TN panel (picture is actually amazing) -Controls are easy to use and the joystick works really well -Great selection of ports and USB 3.0...

-Very tiny amount of backlight on the very right and bottom edge of the panel (can only notice in black screen scenes) -Speakers kind of weak for sound/bass but serve purpose for when you want to rest those ears from headphones.

Don't pass on this.

The colors look great. It is a nice monitor. The interface with the joystick is great. It is a bargain at $399. Even better now at $389. Great investment to better enjoy new things like DOOM.

-27" -144Hz -2560x1440 -Warranty

The quality control needs improvement. I lucked out and only had 1 dead pixel in the top left area that wont bother me. Backlight bleed is tolerable.

Seems to be a defective model type.

I have never had any issues like this with ASUS products. I replaced 2 ASUS screens with these that still work fine. I am regretting spending the money on these.

I ordered 2 of these and the 1 works great. Super fast refresh rates. Love the fact the the USB hub will stay on when the screen is in standby.

The first defective screen I had has a stuck pixel that was lower center screen and the one is was replaced with has a dead pixel in the lower left part of the screen. in other words 2/3 monitors I have received are defective I would not recommend...

she's a beaut!!!

- I was mighty tempted to buy two when they were on sale. - I didn't. That means you can buy one. Wait, they're not on sale anymore. Oh well, I left one for you just in case.

- Beautiful monitor. It's as significant an upgrade as when I went from 19" LCD to a 23" 1080p widescreen way back when. - No manufacturing or quality issues. - Solid stand. - Admittedly, I don't get to use the monitor as much as I'd like, but what...

- Took a few moments to get used to controls. I now like to keep it simple and only use the power button. - What is the deal with the crosshairs?

Overall, A big let down.

Playing games like GTA V was great at 1440p with freesync turned on. I didn't see any tearing in any of the games i played. However, within a few hours of use over a few days of ownership, my first unit developed what i can only call the worst back...

-144hz / Freesync = Tear-Free FPS gaming. - Great base design, and highly adjustable with height, tilt, and pivot. - Tons of settings and color profiles to customize. - Easy to navigate menu thanks to the joystick.

- Horrible back light bleed - not just around the edges. (See below for more) - Button positions on the right of the screen make it harder to use in a multiple monitor setup. - No VGA? - Asus customer care said the defects i saw with this monitor were...
