Brother MFC8840DN All-in-one Printer

Standing 21.8 inches tall and weighing about 40 pounds, the MFC-8840DN is smaller and lighter than most other laser MFPs we tested for our July 2005 roundup. Its simple, well-conceived front panel holds one-touch buttons for faxing, scanning, and...

The MFC-8840DN comes with 32MB of memory, expandable to 160MB. It can hold 300 sheets of letter- or legal-size paper; and for $140 more, you can add a 250-sheet paper tray

Service and support

Brother MFC-8840 laser

Fast; inexpensive; good print quality; extensive fax features.

Mediocre scan quality, especially color.

Brother's MFC-8440 covers the bases and is easy to use, but it's a weak choice for scanning.

Brother MFC-8840DN

If you need a laser-based AIO with a wealth of features, the Brother MFC-8840DN is a good candidate. The 8840DN lacks a few extras, such as duplex scanning, but offers other functions you may find useful. You can use it as a standalone copier or fax...

Good performance; high-quality text; better-quality photos than most monochrome lasers or all-in-ones (AIOs); 50-sheet automatic document feeder; built-in fax modem; duplex printing

Graphics and photos show subtle dithering patterns

The Brother MFC-8840DN four-function AIO offers lots of features, including a built-in fax modem, 50-page automatic document feeder, and a duplexer for printing. Graphics output is a bit below par, but output quality is better overall than for most...

After deciding that the bundled PP9 software wasn't going to do the trick for me, I purchased PaperPort 11 Pro upgrade (yes, the bundled version is eligible for upgrade, saving you $xx). At $xxx the PP 11 software isn't cheap, but it finally made my...

Printing and scanning speed and quality, ease and flexibility of setup, good per-page printing cost. Duplex printing at this cost is a huge bonus, as is network capability

Bundled PaperPort 9SE software is somewhat limited; I opted to upgrade to PP 11 Pro

Small office multifunction printer

I use this device here for a small office with about 15 people. We use all the features except the fax since we have our own fax machine. LAN set up was simple, assuming you understand how to configure TCP/IP and software. You need to install the...

VERY quick b&w/gray scanning ; Network printer/scanner/copier/fax all in one via ethernet. Can output to email or file, with selection of what applications to use for each function ; Easy set up via built in menu options on device ; Easy to use software

Color scanning (24-bit) is slow, but acceptable (100-200 dpi) if you do not use color scanning often

Great network printer, slow scanner

I have owned an inkjet Brother MFC-3820CN for many years and have been very happy with it, but it was time to upgrade to a faster printer -- and most of my printing was B&W only anyway, so a monochrome laser made sense. I love Brother products because...

Built in ethernet, great print quality, fast printer, very flexible

Color scanning is *slow* (think 2+ minutes per page at 300 dpi color!), software install process is cumbersome, and no "scan to memory card" functionality like on other Brother MFCs
