Outputs superior-quality photo prints; easy setup; adequately fast print speeds.

Mediocre text and graphics print quality; high ink costs; flimsy paper trays.

The HP 3820's price and stellar photo output make it a good family-photo printer but not a solid all-purpose choice.

WHAT'S HOT: The 3820 produced realistic-looking gray-scale photos, and gave color graphics and glossy photos good detail. It printed narrow parallel lines with only a bit of distortion.

In test photos, colors were a bit off and gradations did not blendsmoothly

Up front, the same flip-down panel serves for both a 100-sheet input and 50-sheet output tray (with pages landing face up on a small catch flap). The horizontal feed is easy to use, resists skewing, and only jammed once in our tests -- plain paper...

Two year life span

 

Printer is inexpensive, prints decent photos, easy setup

2 year life span, noisy, vibrates, cheap construction, impossible to fix, new cartridges $$$
