HP LaserJet 1020 review

The HP LaserJet 1020 is an inexpensive monochrome laser printer for home users with light printing needs. Its print speeds and quality aren't stellar, but at $180, it's hard to fault it too much. For that price, you get a very basic and compact printer...

Very inexpensive; good text quality; print costs are low; manual feed tray for one-off prints.

No built-in duplexer; not network-ready; graphics print quality needs improvement.

The HP LaserJet 1020 is a good deal for home users who have light print needs, but just a little bit more money can get you more features and better print quality.

HP Laserjet 1020 Laser Printer

If you don't print constantly and you're prepared to stash your paper supply in a drawer between uses, the $180 HP LaserJet 1020 can help you make the most of your precious home-office space. With its paper tray flipped up, it folds into a neat box...

Small footprint ; Competitive price

Text quality failed to impress

The paper tray holds up to 150 sheets and can cope with legal-size paper. You'll have to feed envelopes one at a time through the manual slot just above the paper tray. With only two lights, the LaserJet 1020's control panel is about as simplest you...

HP LaserJet 1020

The HP LaserJet 1020 ($179.99 direct) is one of the few monochrome laser printers that qualifies as truly personal—and not just because of the low price. The size and weight, at 8.2 by 14.6 by 9.5 inches (HWD) and 11 pounds, are in the same class as...

Small size. Excellent text by any measure. Reasonably high-quality graphics and photos for the price

Low paper capacity, at only 150 sheets

This personal monochrome laser takes up as little space as a typical ink jet and delivers excellent text at a reasonable speed. But the 150-sheet paper capacity makes it a poor choice even if you print as little as 50 pages per day.

Small, cheap

Poor print quality

Small size and a low price make the HP LaserJet 1020 a good fit for a home office in which space is at a premium and occasional printing jobs don't require the utmost in speed, quality and economy.

HP LaserJet 1020

You want to be able to print colour photos so you buy an inkjet printer, but you soon realise that it's not very economical forprinting text only documents. So, you think about buying a laser printer as well, because there are quite a few cheap ones

Workhorse printer, Reliable, Cheap to run

Limited memory, Sparse features

A great little laser printer with a sturdy build quality, fast output and great text

HP backs the LaserJet 1020 with a standard one-year warranty, which is on par with the competition. HP's Web site has downloadable drivers, software, and manuals; e-mail and online chat tech support; FAQs; and a troubleshooting guide.

It's hard not to like this nippy little printer. While available for pocket-money prices it is built to the same quality standards as other HP printers and there's really no competition without shelling out a lot more dough.
