Sony VPL-HS3: projection for less

Front projectors seem to be getting cheaper by the minute. In fact, DLPs have finally caught up with LCDs in the $1,000 price range. That puts a lot of pressure on entry-level LCD projectors such as the Sony VPL-HS3. Read our full review to find out...

Independent input memory; good video processing including 2:3 pull-down; decent black-level performance; DVI and HDMI inputs.

Distracting screen-door effect; poor out-of-box color temperature.

This entry-level LCD delivers good black levels, but don't expect miracles.

Great brightness for this price

No pitch adjustment, flyscreen effect

Independent input memory ; Good video processing including 2:3 pull-down ; Decent black-level performance ; DVI and HDMI inputs

Distracting screen-door effect ; Poor out-of-box colour temperature

Overall, the VPL-HS3 is a solid choice for budget projection duties, but if the screen-door effect bugs you, try a low-cost DLP such as Dell's 2200MP or Infocus's X2. Step-up higher-resolution LCD projectors such as the Panasonic PT-AE500U or Sony's...
