Humax HDR-1000S review

A stylish Freesat receiver with the new catch-up TV service, plus outstanding connectivity and a big 1TB disk for recording.

The new catch-up TV service from Freesat moves the service forward significantly, and we like the EPG and general ease of use. It's still lagging behind YouView though, and we'd definitely recommend the Freeview option over Freesat if you can get good...

Humax HDR-1000S

Humax's Freesat+ PVR with Free Time is one of the best money can buy

Onscreen menus a joy to use ; Excellent picture quality ; Decent range of network features

No built-in Wi-Fi ; No 4OD and Demand 5 yet ; Inconsistent EPG layout

The Humax HDR-1000S is a wonderful Freesat PVR, mixing broadcast and on-demand TV content with even more panache than its YouView rival. The Free Time EPG is the highlight, making it easy to find content with its slick, sophisticated onscreen...

Humax HDR-1000S/500GB

Best Freesat recorder, Awards 2013. No match for YouView, but if you're determined to go Freesat this is the best box

Clean, detailed picture ; Great sound ; User-friendly ; Nice integration of catch-up TV

Neither looks nor feels very premium ; Limited on-demand content for now

So if great sound, superb picture quality and one of the most user-friendly TV experiences out there sounds like everything you want from a PVR, the Humax HDR-1000S is the one to get. Just don’t go thinking this is Freesat’s answer to YouView. It isn’t...

Humax HDR-1000S (500GB) review

Just as it recently had the ‘honour' of producing the first YouView box, Humax's latest Freesat+ HD PVR is the first to carry Freesat's new ‘Free Time' EPG. Free Time receivers from Sagemcom, Manhattan and Philips are set to appear in the coming...

Smart-looking design and solid build; Free Time EPG works well; media playback capability

No Demand 5 or 4OD yet; TV portal needs more apps; Wi-Fi not built-in; 1TB version only £20 more expensive

Humax HDR-1000S freesat with freetime

Since freesat launched, it's been assaulting our eyes with its capital letter - or lack thereof - lunacy. Now, with freetime, or, as the firm calls it we've got some angled brackets thrown in for good measure. What is this, algebra? Freetime could be...

Stylish box, great interface and EPG, not too expensive, good picture quality

Lack of 4oD and Demand 5 is unforgivable, media streaming is slow, has problems with shorter recordings and misses the end/start sometimes, no Wi-Fi

Freetime could be one of the hardest things we've had in for review to score. On the one hand, the hardware looks smart, ticks all the right boxes and the software on the device is stylish and functional.
