Epson Perfection 4490 Photo

This feature-rich flatbed delivers attractive photo and film scans, but at a premium price.

The Epson Perfection 4490 is a powerful scanner with versatile image-enhancing features, but its premium price makes it best suited for serious photographers and other detail-conscious users.

Epson Perfection 4490 Photo

If you have a large store of 35-mm and 2.25-inch film you want to digitize, the Epson Perfection 4490 Photo is one of your better flatbed choices right now.

Scans film in 35-mm and 2.25-inch medium film format. Color-restore feature. Digital ICE dust and scratch removal for film. 30-page automatic document feeder (ADF) option.

Dust removal works for slides and film only.

Epson Perfection 4990 Photo

The Epson Perfection 4990 Photo handles photos very well and slides better than most.

Digital ICE for removing scratches. Color restore feature. Dust removal for scanning film. Film scan quality is among the best for flatbed scanners.

No ADF. Comes with little software for scanning anything but photos and film.

Canon CanoScan LiDE 80

Slim and light enough to fit into an attaché case, the Canon CanoScan LiDE 80 ($180 street) has a maximum optical resolution of 2,400 by 4,800 pixels per inch (ppi). Since it's based on CIS (contact image sensor) rather than CCD (charge-coupled device)...

Digital Film Scanners - Nikon CoolScan IV ED Film and Slide Scanner Review, Information, and Specifications

Professional-quality scans; 2900 dpi resolution; 36-bit color depth; USB interface; amazing "Digital ICE" dust & scratch removal; new Digital "ROC" and "GEM" correct for faded negatives and film grain automatically

The Nikon Coolscan IV ED delivers a surprisingly high level of performance for a 12-bit scanner. Excellent electronics produce better results than some 14-bit devices, and the sharp ED optics make the absolute most of the 2900 dpi resolution. With a...

This review is approaching its end, so it's time to sum it up in a few words. And in my opinion, the Epson Perfection 4490 Photo is a somewhat insipid, aimless product. It has a rather high price ($250) but lacks some useful functions. I don't like...
