Review: August Smart Lock

The redesigned August Smart Lock lets you use your phone as your key.

Affordable new price. Doesn't skimp on features like DoorSense. New design is still minimalist and clean.

No Alexa or Google Assistant compatibility without extra purchase. Auto Unlock can be hit-or-miss due to Bluetooth geofencing.

August Smart Lock

The August Smart Lock is a sharp-looking door lock that uses Bluetooth technology to lock and unlock your door using your smartphone. It's a snap to install and easy to manage.

Easy to install. Stylish. Straightforward app. Works as advertised.

Expensive. Some authorization lag.

Conclusions The August Smart Lock offers an easy and attractive way to bring connected home technology to your house without the need for a third party Z-Wave or ZigBee hub. Unlike most smart locks, it uses your existing lock hardware (and keys) and is...

August Smart Lock review

Editor's note, Feb. 13, 2015: This review has been updated to account for the August Connect WiFi accessory.

Good looks, strong user management, and convenient automated features make the August Smart Lock a leader in its niche.

Android users don't get auto-unlock at launch, Bluetooth can cause irritating connection lag, you can't control the August Smart Lock over Wi-Fi without a separate hub and at $250 it's one of the most expensive smart locks available.

We haven't seen a flawless smart lock yet, but the August Smart Lock comes closer than any of its competitors thanks to its ease of use and overall polish.

Can August lock down the smart lock market?

August is another entrant into the smart lock market. Its relatively low $199 price makes it an appealing option for DIY home automation fans.

August Connect and August Smart Lock review

Your connected home is only complete if it's secure, and that starts at the front door. Though several cameras and motion sensors plan to tell you if something is going on, there's no better first step for security than a locked door. There's also...

If you want a lock that is more convenient than your existing one, August is an easy recommendation. The ability to remotely lock and unlock your door — sometimes from halfway around the world if you needed to — is really convenient. Granting...

August Smart Lock Review: Best Budget Smart Lock

The August Smart Lock is the best budget lock, but you'll need to spend extra to connect it to Wi-Fi.

Easy to install ; Works with Alexa, Google Assistant, Z-Wave, Nest, IFTTT and more ; Flexible settings ; Auto-Lock and Auto-Unlock features

Need to purchase Connect bridge to link to Wi-Fi ; No Apple Homekit or Amazon Key support

The August Smart Lock is a great pick for the budget-minded smart home owner. It's cheaper than the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock (even after you include the optional August Connect bridge), with the only missing features being Z-Wave and Homekit support. If...

August Smart Lock and Connect Review: I'll Use Keys, Thanks

Four months ago, we called the August Smart Lock superb. I knew that sooner or later, I'd invite one into my home. I got my chance a few weeks ago with the August Connect dongle, a $50 add-on that gives the lock internet access so you can control it...

August Smart Lock Review

August Smart Lock is one of the best smart locks for convenience and control. While the lock won't compromise your security, it doesn't do much to improve it. In addition to extensive support services, the company offers August Access, which is a...

August Smart Lock is compatible with more smart home platforms than any other smart lock in our review.

This smart lock has the lowest potential to improve home security among the locks in our review.

August Smart Lock is easy to install, has many useful accessories and offers unique services. However, it lacks some security features of higher-ranked smart locks.

August Smart Lock brings your front door online with style

The August Smart Lock nails most of the things I'd want in a connected door lock. It's easy to install. It looks good (yes, despite its size) and the August app (in iOS, at least) gives you the right balance between flexibility and keeping things safe...
